Massive holding of thousands on pages filling 10 large boxes; includes machine cancels from the 1890's on with the major cities (Chattanooga, Knoxville, Memphis and Nashville) having sections of the various machine cancel types, majority of material identified by the collector as to the dial and killer types, modern material includes some handstamp duplex marks, special event cancels, etc.; a truly extensive holding and an excellent study for further development.

1909       Tennessee - Postal History Balance. Several hundred cards and covers, all which the collector purchased in recent years from one dealer - and then did not transfer to his main collection, everything is sleeved, carded and priced, wide range of covers running from the stampless and/or manuscript era up through cards and covers of the 1940's, general price range from not very much up about $45 or so, better manuscripts includes 1851 New Market, 1854 Morgan Creek, 1826 Campbell Station, 1850's Mouth of Sandy in ladies cover, 1850's Leniors P.M. free frank, 1847 White Hall, etc., town strikes including 1881 Summertown straight line with star killer; retail paid was $8,300, generally fine to very fine with very minimal mixed condition.

Of several hundred items from early stampless to the 1940's; nice range of town marks and a few interesting usages, stampless with ca. 1825 Knoxville arch, 1837 Franklin cds, 1832 Shellyville manuscript on folded letter to Ireland, some Civil War era material including patriotic covers, post-war with Southern Express label use from Memphis, also the correspondences including 1840's with usages from Nashville, 1830-40's Lawrenceburg correspondence of over 95 folded letters.

About 40 examples mostly chosen for attractiveness or the rarity of the cancel (rarities to Helbock 4, 5, and even 6), better towns are Lincoln, Wilson Station, Acting, Balta, Lowe, Bellamy, Butler's Landing, Spain, High House with unusual agent handstamp, Highland Springs, Simcoe, Holly Leaf, Whitfield, Holloway, Tom's Creek, English, and one or two town's that do not show in Helbock; very few cheaper items with values to $50 or so, minimal conditions issues, with most in the fine to very fine range, many of such items can be found in the general Tennessee collection.

1914       imageTennessee - Stampless Balance. About eighty such items, earliest item we saw dates from 1820, spotted good contents here and there such as a letter to the New York Herald "your advocacy of the Missouri Line of Compromise has made you thousands of friends in the south", one letter mentions a prisoner that escaped during trial and the sheriff wants him back, one incoming item from London, a letter delivered by slave, an 1821 Bean's Station, letter mentioning using slave traders as couriers of gold specie, early Nashvilles in different colors.
