8-page original soldier's letter datelined "Harper's Ferry Va, June 12th/61" from the "11th Miss Inf" that mentions among other things regiments in camp from Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee and even one from
Baltimore; minor edge repairs and reduced at right, Fine and good letter.

The 11th Mississippi was part of Gen. Joe Johnson's Army of the Valley and fought at the 1st Manasas (7/21/61).

 Confederacy, (West Virginia) Romney (West) Va. Jan 25. Bold strike of cds with matching bold "5" rating handstamp and manuscript "Due" rating on circa 1862 buff cover
addressed to Vaucluse, Frederick Co. Va., endorsed "Frank B. Jones, Major 2nd Inftry Va. Vols", opening tears and some edge wear, Fine.
Estimate; $200 - 300.
Romney is in Hampshire County that would later be
incorporated into the Union State of West Virginia in 1863. Francis Buckner Jones (1828-1862) was an 1848 graduate of VMI, and mortally wounded in action at Gaines Mill on June 27, 1862 and died on July 9, 1862. He was in the 2nd Regiment of
Va. Vol. that was part of Gen. R.J (Stonewall) Jackson's command. In January 1862, Jackson made a march on the are of Romney. The idea was to break up the railroads in that area, but the campaign turned out to be a failure. (Image1) |
