Partial cds with matching "Paid" and "10" rating handstamps on orange buff cover to Greensboro Ala., with lengthy 8-page original soldier's letter datelined "Harper's Ferry Va, June 12th/61" from the "11th Miss Inf" that mentions among other things regiments in camp from Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee and even one from Baltimore; minor edge repairs and reduced at right, Fine and good letter.

The 11th Mississippi was part of Gen. Joe Johnson's Army of the Valley and fought at the 1st Manasas (7/21/61).

Cds with matching straight line "Paid" and "5" rate handstamps on orange cover addressed to Gordonsville, Va.; partial flap, Very Fine and rare cover, a lovely item from the Confederate occupation of Romney.

Very few Confederate stamps reached West Virginia, so most covers originating there were handstamped. Romney in Hampshire County is said to have changed hands 56 times during the.

1269       imageConfederacy, (West Virginia) Romney (West) Va. Jan 25. Bold strike of cds with matching bold "5" rating handstamp and manuscript "Due" rating on circa 1862 buff cover addressed to Vaucluse, Frederick Co. Va., endorsed "Frank B. Jones, Major 2nd Inftry Va. Vols", opening tears and some edge wear, Fine.

Romney is in Hampshire County that would later be incorporated into the Union State of West Virginia in 1863. Francis Buckner Jones (1828-1862) was an 1848 graduate of VMI, and mortally wounded in action at Gaines Mill on June 27, 1862 and died on July 9, 1862. He was in the 2nd Regiment of Va. Vol. that was part of Gen. R.J (Stonewall) Jackson's command. In January 1862, Jackson made a march on the are of Romney. The idea was to break up the railroads in that area, but the campaign turned out to be a failure.

1270       imageConfederacy, (West Virginia) "Trav Repose, Va, Nov 8" (West Virginia). Manuscript postmark with with matching cross-hatch canceling 5¢ green (1) on orange cover to Breckenridge Va.; edge wear, F.-V.F. and scarce use from this small town.

Traveler's Repose was a confederate encampment at the famous Inn and Tavern on the Staunton-Parkersburg Pike. The Confederate Army was camped here during the Winter of 1861-62. In the Spring of 1862, they pulled back to Staunton Va.
