 Hawaii, (Maui) "Sandwich Is. Maui, on Board Ship Emily Morgan, Oct. 1853". Dateline on 8 page highly descriptive letter from a whaleship anchored at Maui that reads in part, "Thinking of brief sketch
of the method of capturing, killing, and taking care of a Sperm Whale would be interesting to you. And having my writing tacks aboard I will endeavor to give you a faithful description of the Modus Operandi: When upon cruising groundmen are stationed
at the fore main & mizzen top gallant croptree on the look out for spouts which are caused by the whale in breathing sending forth cloud of spray from his spout hole which is situated in the fore part of the head. When a spout is discovered the look
out sings out "There she blows". Captain asks "Where away" the look out gives him the direction and distance. And in a moment the Captain is at mast head. He soon makes out whether it is a Sperm Whale by the spout. Should it be cries
"Call all hands! Get your boats ready" The boats are about 27 feet in length by _ width, sharp at both ends. The lines are coiled in tubs and are put in the boats. The harpoons are bent on the lines. and all is ready. When the ship is within
proper distance, the Capt. Orders to "lower away". And all the boats are down in a twinkling. Each boat has a crew of six men, one of which is called boatsteerer, whose business it is to fasten to the whale, and an officer who is boat header
who kills the whale…All are excite at the Header's "Cry out, Pull my hunters pull! There he lays like a log- Give way my hunters! I'll give you anything I am in possession of it we get him. Oh pull! Do pull! You shall have
everything but my wife, do pull!!…", a Very Fine and interesting whaling letter with great detail.

"UNOFFICIAL" POSTMASTER, REVEREND EDWARD W. BAILEY.
According to Gregory, the Wailuku post office was officially established in 1859. Prior to 1859, the Reverend Edward W. Bailey served as an unofficial postmaster. The postmark and
"Free" rating are in the hand of the Reverend Bailey. The "Free" was not necessary since inter- and intra-island mail was postage-free by legislative order until 1859. All five recorded examples of this manuscript postmark are on
letters from Rev. E. Bailey to Rev. D. Baldwin at Lahaina. (Image1) |

 Hawaii, (Molokai) Kalaupapa, Molokai, H.I. Purple three-line postmark tying U.S. 2¢ Bureau issue on cover to Honolulu, reverse with "Honolulu, H.I., Jun 20, 1900" receiving duplex; cover with
"restored" corners that were clipped for fumigation, Very Fine, an extremely rare territorial postmark usage from Kalaupapa, Molokai used less than a week after Hawaii became a territory.
Estimate; $750 - 1,000.
Because of an outbreak of the bubonic plague, fumigation was required on all mail from December of 1899 until April 30, 1900. This cover shows that fumigation took place several months more in Molokai. (Image1) |

 Hawaii, (Molokai) Molokai (S Isles), Nov. 23rd, 1845. Dateline on folded letter addressed to Harvey Baldwin in Hudson, Ohio, letter written by Reverend Claudius Buchanan Andrews who was stationed in
Kaluaaha, with pencil "To be forwarded by the first opportunity" senders endorsement, entered the U.S. mails with red "Boston, Mass., May 25" cds and matching "Ship" and "12" rate handstamps, with lengthy letter
describing the island and its inhabitants…Its people were the strangest of all and remarks on the Missionaries efforts to change the natives…It is and always has been as common for Hawaiians to sleep men, women, children,
girls, boys, all along together on their mats as for English to get up on a bedstead. What should they do when they have never had or seen till us missionaries came, either bedstead, chair or table? A great effort of missionaries here now is, to
break up this manner of sleeping and all we can do until they get into better than their grass houses is to tell them to curtain off some part of the room for one sex, and another for another, and make it taboo for either sex to sleep out of their
place., Very Fine, ex-Aall.

AN INTERESTING HAWAII AND UNITED STATES COMBINATION COVER FROM HILO
PREPAID FOR STEAMSHIP SERVICE, BUT ACTUALLY SENT BY SLOWER SAILING SHIP.
This cover originated from Hilo with 15¢ Hawaiian postage that was enough to cover the 5¢ Hawaiian postage and 10¢ U.S. steamship fee. At Honolulu, the
post office decided to put it on a sailing ship instead, rather than hold it for the next American steamship, the "Idaho" expected to depart August 29th. So instead of putting a U.S. 10¢ stamp on it, they only put the 5¢ stamp that
was sufficient for the 5¢ sailing packet fee. Cover was carried by American bark "Clara R. Sutil" from Honolulu Aug. 15th to San Francisco arriving Sep. 26th. Letter was postmarked at San Francisco Sep. 28th for the overland mail. As
things turned out, the "Clara R. Sutil" was slow and got to San Francisco thirteen days after the steamship arrival of Sep. 13th. (Image1) |
