Scott Nos. C12; $1,400.

The giant Dornier DO-X flying boat (which could carry up to 170 passengers) did not find a buyer in the U.S., so it was decided to fly it back to Germany in 1932 via Newfoundland and the Azores. 8,000 of the watermarked version of the $1 air mail (which traced the Alcock-Brown flight's route) were surcharged $1.50. The successful 1932 flight demonstrated the great advances made in just 13 years since Alcock-Brown. Use of the underlying stamp with its reference to their pioneering effort.
