Mail not found until June 24. Taken to Los Angeles where green "Return to Writer" auxiliary mark was applied. Two line magenta "wrecked mail plane" auxiliary mark also applied in Los Angeles. Massachusetts -- Fitchburg 1929 sea and airmail cover to London via Boston and Galway Ireland Cover originated in Fitchburg MA, went to Boston and put on board SS Karlsruhe for transatlantic shipment to Galway Ireland. Green event label attached enroute. The label was used in connection with August 26, 1929 Galway to London experimental flight that was intended to speed up mail from America. Flight is listed as AC4 in Irish catalogs. 1,234 pieces of mail were carried, postmarked Boston or New York. Mail was flown by hydroplane from the Karlsruhe to Galway, then by normal airmail to London. This was hoped to save one or two days in transporting mail between USA and Britain. This ship-shore-air service was never repeated. (Image1) (image2)

Each was carried by Indian Motorcycle from Green Bay to Milwaukee. United States -- U.S. Army 1930 Polar Flight cover from Spokane WA and return In January 1930 Major Ralph Royce commanded the 1st Pursuit Group in a flight across the northern United States from Selfridge Field to Spokane, Washington and back in what became known as the "Arctic Patrol" flight, in order to put "pursuit tactics to the acid test under extremely rigorous weather conditions, and to afford a very broad opportunity for testing flying equipment in zero temperatures". Royce was promoted to general during World War II. A West Point graduate who learned to fly in 1915–16, he served with the 1st Aero Squadron in the Pancho Villa Expedition and later led it on the Western Front. During World War II as a brigadier general, he led the Royce special mission to Mindanao, in which a small force of bombers flew from Australia to attack Japanese targets in the Philippines. Later he was Deputy Commander of the Ninth Air Force and commanded the 1st Provisional Tactical Air Force. First cover is autographed by Major Royce. Second cover commemorates safe return.
