CRASH MAIL, 1930-37: Trio of covers inc. 8 May 1930 Aeropostale env. from Chabas to France. The LATE 28 piloted by Negrin crashed & sank between Buenos Aires and Natal on 10 May (Nierinck 300510) killing all but one passenger. Purple cachet on revers "Accident d'Avion/Correspondences Receuillies en mer/NE PAS TAXER"; 3 Nov. 1935 env. from Argentina to Paris crashed after leaving Bahia. Mail bags found on beach at Aracaju, no survivors. Violet cachet applied on reverse "COURRIER ACCIDENTE AU BRESIL/LE 3 NOVEMBRE 1935". Nierinck 351103.. Also 18 Oct. 1937 cover from Buenos Aires to Belgium. Plane disappeared en route fro Dakar to France with mail retrieved from sea off Morocco. 1930 FIRST COMMERCIAL DIRECT CROSSING OF S. ATLANTIC ATTEMPT BY MERMOZ: Group of 4 covers from Montevideo to Europe. This return leg in "Comte de Vaux" was scheduled for Jun. 7 1930, but after 35 failed attempts to take off, mail was transferred to boat for the crossing. The covers were destined for Italy, Spain, France & Germany. All are handstamped with the cachet "AEROPOSTALE/PRIMER CORREO AEREO DIRECTO/AMERICA-EUROPA/AVIADOR MERMOZ/7 JUNIO 1930" in purple or red. The 4 Jun. 1930 cover to Germany was carried by Mermoz on the 'successful' second attempt of 8 Jul, though the plane put down on the sea 700km short of Dakar and sank!
