ADJUTANT GENERALS OFFICE WASHINGTON "WHEREABOUTS" LETTER TO NEWPORT SALOP: 1865 env. + printed content from Adjutant General, Washington (DC) to Newport Salop. The Adjutant General's Office printed env is endorsed "Care of US Consul London" and was posted in London 24 July 1865 presumably having crossed the Atlantic in the Diplomatic Bag. The letter reports to the father John Watkins Snr. of Newport that William Watkins of Co. K 14th Regiment Michigan Volunteers "Missing on the march and supposed to have been captured by the enemy".
