Mexico, Vapor Nal. "Alejandro". Purple straight line handstamp on U.S. 1884, 2¢ brown entire to Mazatlan, with matching fancy circular "Franco" handstamp, reverse with purple "Thomas Bell & Co., San Francisco, Nov. 21, 1887" handstamp, Very Fine and rare, Thomas Bell was a wealthy investor in the New Almaden mine (a cinnabar - mercury mine). He owned a mansion at Bush & Octavia streets in San Francisco.

Mexico, Vapor Newbern, Agente De Correos. Purple oval handstamp (Schimmer maritime 30, rarity 9) tying 1885, Hidalgo Profile, 6c + 10c + 20c on Mazatlan corner card cover to Paris, France, the cover boarded in Mazatlan and discharged in Guaymas with "Franco Guaymas Jul 16 1885" octagon date stamp on reverse (Schimmer Son 35/4), then by rail with Benson, Ariz. and New York transits. Paris receiver; 20c with pre-use corner nick, otherwise Very Fine, beautiful examples of this rare Newbern ship cancel, a wonderful showpiece.

Charpenter, Renaud Co was an importer of European goods sold retail in Mazatlan. The Newbern was associated with silver smuggling into the USA which had a high tariff on silver. Manuscript endorsement with "via Colima" routing on cover to Ciudad Guzman, franked with grid canceled 1886, 10c Numeral, red "Mazatlan, Set 18, 1888, Sinaloa Mexico" origin postmark (Schimmer Sin 287) and Manzanillo transit, traveled inland through Colima to Ciudad Guzman; partial backflap and stamp corner nick, otherwise Very Fine, the sea routing would have been preferable to overland during the September rainy season when some rivers may not be crossable, a fine maritime mail example with interesting routing, ex-Whitehead, Schimmer.
