Siar 25/3/09", addressed to a resident of small island of Selen, located near Eitape, signed and accompanied by 1969 Bothe certificate. (Trading vessels traveling between the atolls of Marshall Islands were required to deliver mail to the scattered atolls. Covers received manuscript cancelations with the date of receipt and the name of the ship or name of the atoll. While no regulations were applied in New Guinea, the captain of the steamer "Siar" provided "Atoll Mail" service, canceling stamps by hand and delivering letters to addressees along his route) (Image)

New Guinea was declared to be on War Status on 6th August, 1914, after which date censorship was imposed on the outgoing (very limited) mail (Image)

1914 (22 Aug) postal card with "Herbertshohe Deutsch-Neu-Guinea" departure pmk, overprinted "nur fur die Wehrabteilung und fur die Expeditionstruppe", showing official violet seal "Kaiserlich Deutsche Post Rabaul Deutsch Neuguinea" at left, handstamped "Absender Dienstgrad" and pencil addressed to Rabaul, with 1989 Lantelme certificate. Also included is a top portion only of a similar card, endorsed as Field post card, with Rabaul (9.9) departure pmk and official violet seal (at the start of WWI, German troops in New Guinea were ordered to defend Radio Station and other facilities. A number of cards were prepared for use by the troops in the field, without payment of postage. These cards were overprinted "Field Post only for the defense Corps and the Expeditionary Troops". This handstamp was lost during a raid by Australian forces on Rabaul on 12 August and later supplies were validated in manuscript, until the German surrender on 17th September, 1914) (Image)

Letters from Germany to their Colonies were being mailed right up to the outbreak of the war (28 July, 1914). Due to the British blockade and capture of German ships on the high seas, there was no possibility for delivery and mail already in the postal system was marked "Return due to the state of war" and sent back to senders (Image)
