Early 20th Century Signed Israel's Theater Pledge.  The Israeli National Theater presents a remarkable letter dated in Hebrew 1924, written on its headletter stationery and signed by six individuals. Among the signatories are Miriam Bernstein-Cohen (Maria Alexandrova) an Israeli actress, director, poet, and translator (1895–1991), who founded the first Hebrew-language periodical dedicated to theater in Palestine. Also signing is Menahem Natanovich Gnessin (1882–1951), an early Russian Jewish actor and Hebrew language instructor, who helped establish Habimah, the world's first professional Hebrew theater. Another signatory is Ari Kote (May 25, 1900 – October 6, 1980), an Israeli theater actor who immigrated to Israel in 1921, worked as a construction worker, and was among the founders of the Israeli National Theater in 1923. . . The letter, dated 1924, pledges payment of 6 liras to Mrs. Bella Pavzner for performances, except those of workers and students, as part of a total debt of 79 liras owed by the Israeli National Theater.
