USA. c.1840-60 Printed valentine envelopes (5) all printed in gold with decorative designs, four including roses (two also with doves on reverse), the other with cherubs and lovebirds within the design, four postally used, to "Miss Josephine Newell, Fall River, Mass." with "PAID" handstamp, to "Miss Sarah E. Ball, Saccarappa, Me" with manuscript "2", to "Miss Lucy K. Slade, Present" with red "CHELSEA / Ms" datestamp and "PAID", or to "Miss Kate Frathingham, Pittston, Pa" with manuscript "Dunnard Pa, Feb 14th" and "5", the other hand delivered to Miss Matilda E. Thomson in Albany. Also a card by Ch. Magnus of New York depicting a man and lady in gardens with verses below. A fine group. (6).

c.1840-1950 Valentines including 1896 card "I hope you wont get the needle because of my pointed remarks but I'm darned if I dont love you" bearing a real needle and thread posted from Potters Bar; 1904 cover posted from Cowes with enclosed imitation telegraph form "Cupids Official Telegraphs"; cards with silk edging postally used within boxes (2, faults); an early and attractive handdrawn and partly printed card "To My Valentine" (possibly a design for a card); Marcus Ward card with a print of a soldier; a few postcards, 1907 heart shaped card posted from Canada to England franked 2c, etc. (31).

1805 Valentine lettersheet depicting cupid delivering a letter to a seated lady, doves below, within a central oval, well handpainted, with elaborate handcut borders incorporating hearts, a handwritten verse inside, posted from Kingston on Thames to "Mrs Knowles, Leominster Hill, Arundel, Sussex" with "KINGSTON-T / 12" mileage mark. 1808 Valentine lettersheet depicting a cupid and lady holding the "Rights of Love", an arrow through crossed hearts, entitled "May our hearts be thus transfixed", handpainted with handwritten verses, posted within the London 2d Post to "Miss A. Hayes, No 10 Mays Buildings, Bedford Bury" with FE 15 datestamp and "Two Py-Post / Unpaid / Gerrard St". The side flap with a note written in 1933 by the Great Granddaughter of the recipient. 1817 Valentine lettersheet depicting flowers and an arrow through crossed hearts, a central rose lifts to reveal two seated lovers with a church behind, handpainted with a printed verse above, a long handwritten verse within. Posted within the London 2d Post addressed to "Miss F. Gwynne, at Mr Towers, St. Clements Lane, Near Yeates's Court" with "Blackheath / 2py P. Paid" and red FE 14 datestamps, fine and attractive.

c.1821 Valentine lettersheet (undated but watermarked "1821") by Dobbs, a fine embossed border incorporating cupids with wording in French at each corner, the centre with peaches and grapes cut into a "cobweb" pattern (central cord missing, minor splits) which lifts to reveal a heart containing the words "in love be true, as true as mine", handpainted, a long handwritten verse within. Posted to "Miss Mary Hobday, Barham, Canterbury" with light "RAMSGATE / 75" mileage mark, charged "5d" with a further "7d" charge (and "6½" crossed out), presumably an extra 2d local delivery fee charged to Barham. Address panel with the folds strengthened with archival tape, otherwise fine, an attractive and scarce postally used cobweb valentine.

1825 Comic rude valentine lettersheet depicting a man composed of flat irons, sacks, brooms, a pail, a turnip for the head with a saucepan as a hat, handpainted with a printed verse below, posted within the London Local Post to "R. Sarle Esq., Kent Road", with "3" charge mark, "T.P / Lombard St." and red FE 14 datestamp.

c.1825 Comic rude valentine lettersheet with a caricature of a tailor, handpainted with a handwritten verse below, posted from Uxbridge to "Mr Pratt, Mr Stilwells, Moorcroft House, Hillingdon" with "UXBRIDGE / 18" mileage mark on reverse (MX328, recorded 1821-29), fine and unusual.

c1826 Valentine lettersheet (undated but watermarked "1826") with a fine "Endless Knot of Love" within an oval surrounded by a garland of flowers and ribbons, handpainted with handwritten verses, posted to "Miss Liles, Soham Green, Cambridgeshire" with "KIMBOLTON / 66" mileage mark. c.1826-40 Valentine lettersheets, one by Dobbs depicting cupid handing a letter to a gentleman, handpainted with verses below and an embossed border, postally used to "Miss E. Rennalds, Blackwater, Hants" with a 1d charge and boxed "No. 1", unfortunately stained with some peripheral insect damage; two other attractive unused lettersheets depicting courting couples with cupids, handpainted with verses below. c.1830-60 Valentine lettersheets all with embossed borders, four with pictures of courting couples, two with flowers, one with a gentleman leaving a love letter on a table, one with an old lady reading to a young lady, all handpainted, fine and attractive lettersheets, not posted. (8).

c.1833 Valentine lettersheet (undated but watermarked "1833") depicting cupid on a rock with doves delivering his bow and arrow, within a garland of flowers, verses above and below, posted within the London 2d Post to "Mr W. East, No. 1 Union court, Clearkenwell Close" handstamped "2", "T.P / St. John St." and red FE 15 datestamp, fine and attractive.

1834 Valentine lettersheet by Dobbs with a fine embossed border incorporating cupids, wording in French at each corner, a central handpainted rose with verses above and below, handwritten verses within. Posted to "Miss Mirianne Lyndsay, no 4 Donegal St, Belfast", red "..... QUAY" handstamp and datestamps of Dublin (Feb 13) and Belfast. A fine and attractive valentine postally used in Ireland. Posted from London to "Mr John Williamson, Werrington near Peterborough, Northamptonshire", prepaid 8d, London datestamps. Minor soiling and splitting at folds, an attractive postally used valentine.

1835 Valentine lettersheet by Dobbs, a fine embossed border with cupids and wording in French at each corner, the centre with roses, handpainted and cut into a cobweb, which lifts to reveal a cupid, bird and lady with a shield entitled "Tis vain to oppose", inscribed "To my dear Elizabeth" and dated by the sender. 1838 Valentine lettersheet depicting a lady in a country scene, handpainted with a verse below, posted from Richmond to "Miss Hedworth, Icacia Cottage, Hampton Middx" by London Cross Post with flat top handstruck "3" and large "RICHMOND / MG" datestamp (Feb 26), fine and attractive, very unusual with the uncommon cross post charge mark.

1841 Valentine lettersheet with a cupid emerging from a pink rose, handpainted with verses on all sides, posted unpaid from Windsor to "Miss Sharley, Eton Union, Slough" charged 2d, Windsor datestamps. A little internal strengthening to a few folds, otherwise fine and attractive.

1844 Valentine lettersheet with applied and handpainted roses within an embossed frame, the embossed outer border in grey, posted within Newcastle to "Miss Anne Freeman, No. 111 Blenheim Str.", bearing a 1d red (four margins) tied by Maltese Cross, FE 8 backstamp, fine and attractive.

1844 Comic rude valentine lettersheet with a caricature of a coach maker, published by A. Park, Leonard Street, London, handpainted with a verse below, posted within London to "Miss E. Allan, 3 Brunswick Place, Loam-Pit Hill, Deptford" with a 1d red (just four margins) tied by a Maltese Cross, red "T.P / Blackheath S.E" and FE 12 backstamp, unusual.
