CUSTOMS POST TO GERMANY FROM A CUSTOMS EMPLOYEE; 7 July 1882 Hong Kong 3c PC (central crease) 'via Suez' to Oldenburg cancelled with Shanghai cds. Written and datelined at Newchwang by Ernst Ruhstrat (son of a former President of Oldenburg, and sent shortly after commencing his employ at Chinese Customs). An additional 3c Dragon franking applied to the rear has since been removed with a tiny remaining portion of the Newchwang cds, v.rare Bluish double-ring "CUSTOMS/SHANGHAI" and Hong Kong transit cds also on rear. The card is addressed to a Marie Fedelius and is accompanied by two contemporary photographs of a child mounted on card (one endorsed 'Marie Fedelius' and another believed to be the same child in traditional Chinese dressed accompanied by a Chinese nanny). Similar example (same correspondence; also with a stamp missing) sold for $HK74,750 in 2014. Exceedingly rare and a major Exhibition item.
