Stevenson, Picton, Canada West, noted "Paid to the Lines", crossed at the Queenston/Lewiston exchange office, with OCT 26 1848 double split-ring transit, "9" pence in manuscript being the amount due for domestic Canadian postage, endorsed "if not at Picton try Kingston, Canada," a fine cross-border cover, with 2019 P.F. certificate.New York-born David Barker Stevenson was a significant figure in Prince Edward County, Upper Canada, both for his business as well as political interests. A Conservative and ally of Sir John A. MacDonald (who represented Kingston, and was later Canada's first Prime Minister), Stevenson was elected in 1848 to represent Picton in the Third Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada. II, Major Plate Crack, a dramatic top margin block of ten, positions 1-4, 11-14, 23, and 24L2, showing the major cracked plate flaw from plate 2, through positions 2L, 13L, 23L and intermediate crack through 12L, disturbed original gum, vertical and horizontal creases, and closed tear in position 12, fine appearance, with 2019 P.F. certificate. An exceptionally striking and important example of this famous flaw. Our research suggests that this is the largest known multiple, next to a block of nine, ex-Colonel Green, which is illustrated in Ashbrook. Offered for the first time in over half a century, it is a spectacular and key exhibit piece destined for an advanced collection. (Image)
