1916 (25 Jan) "On His Majesty's Service" envelope addressed to the Government Secretary at "H.M.S. Europa", at Mudros (Lt. Commander Lucach, later Sir Harry Luke), franked with seven stamps including 1/2d, 1d, 2 1/2d (two different colors), 4 1/2d, 6d and 1sh, canceled "Afon" 25.1.1916, fine and scarce (contemplated issue for the Holy Community situated on Mount Athos. In the winter of 1915-16, the Allies considered the occupation of the Holy Mountain and in anticipation, prepared a set of six stamps intended for issue on the 25th January, for use by the governing body of the Monastic Republic. They were designed by Lt.Cmdr Luke and printed in imperf. Sheets of 12, by a photographic process (similar to that used in Mafeking during the Boer War) aboard the H.M.Aircraft Carrier "Ark Royal" The 1948 edition of the Robson Lowe Encyclopedia raises two points of interest with these stamps. 1916 "G.R.I. Long Island One Penny", typewritten over Egyptian 5m stationery entire envelope, canceled by red "S 12 May 16" crayon, addressed to an officer aboard "H.M.S. Edgar" at Mudros, endorsed "Fleet letter", fine and incredibly rare postal stationery entire from Long Island ("H.M.S. Edgar" was a first class cruiser of the Royal Navy.
