Jun 22" cds to Old Point Comfort Va. and then back to Washington D.C., various ratings including "Ford", Very Fine triple-rate twice-forwarded use from Mexico.

1846 (Nov. 5) Washington D.C. to Army of Occupation, Mexico. Datelined folded letter with red "Washington City, D.C. Nov 5" cds with matching "Paid" and "10" ratings addressed to Capt. D. Ruggles, 5th Infantry, Army of Occupation, Mexico via New Orleans La., endorsed "Charge Subs. Office, Geo. Gisbon C.G.S." at top right, letter datelined "Office of Com. Genl. of Subs., Washington Nov. 4. 1846" concerning accounts, Very Fine.
Estimate; $150 - 200.

Daniel Ruggles (1810-1897) graduated in 1833 from the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York as 34th out of 43 cadets; among those George W. Cullum and Rufus King. Ruggles and the 5th Infantry joined Gen. Winfield Scott's army for the Mexico City Campaign, fighting at Vera Cruz, San Antonio, Churubusco, Molino del Rey, Chapultepec and Mexico City. Ruggles was breveted for Gallant and Meritorious Conduct to Major after Churubusco and to Lieutenant Colonel after Chapultepec.

Ruggles was a Brigadier General in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He was a division commander at the Battle of Shiloh.
