1855 Type 2 VF+ Detail but holed at K12 for use in a charm bracelet. Ample evidence of use in jewelry, but no damage other than that noted. (.0484 ozt AGW) (Image)
1856 Liberty NGC AU55. Moderately scarce as most "No Motto" $10 Libs are. Garrett & Guth mention that mint state specimens are "very rare." Of 396 coins graded by NGC only 39 are mint state, another 210 are either AU55 or AU58. (Note that due to the cost of grading, most gold coins below AU50 are not submitted unless they are major rarities.) (Image)

1859-S Liberty NGC AU50 (old small-font holder.) Minted at a time when gold coins actively circulated in the American West, this issue is often seen well-circulated. Mint state coins are quite rare. Garrett and Guth note that they are usually encountered in heavily worn condition. Of 114 coins graded by NGC, only 10 are uncirculated, 9 of which are MS62 or below. (There is a lone MS65 which is undoubtedly worth a small fortune.) Another characteristic of the present coin is that it has a "filled" S mintmark, a known variety for this issue but one that adds no significant premium. (Image)
(2) 1903 Liberty Quarter Eagles w/ earring posts soldered on and fully-functional. The posts appear to be 14k gold but it is not indicated. The entire ensemble contains .263 ozt AGW. An interesting relic of a bygone era. (Image)
