Undated Type 3 AU obv but damage to the rev in the center of the coin obliterates the date. Inspection recommended. (Image)
1856-S Liberty NGC AU55. Garrett & Guth, authors of the "Encyclopedia of US Gold Coins", mention that this issue was remarkably well-produced compared to gold coins from the other branch mints. Most entered circulation and are more worn than the attractive example presented here. A scarce issue as well with a mintage of only 72,120. Worth inspection (scratch seen in photo is on case and not on the coin). (Image)

1870 Liberty PCGS AU53. With a modest mintage of only 4,520 the 1870 Quarter Eagle is considered a condition rarity. Almost never encountered in true mint state, even the specimen in the Smithsonian Institute (from the Lilly collection) only grades AU55. An opportunity for the advanced gold collector. (Image)
