Arkansas Fancy Cancel Exhibit Collection, 1929-35. Of 30 covers and card written up on exhibit pages, showing various pictorial & numeral cancellations used at 4th class post office during this time period; starting with seven strikes of fancy black fork cancels on 1933 registered entire from Black Fork, Ark. (less than 10 examples reported), four 1930-31 Bear, Ark. usages with rare early first type bear fancy (one of five examples known by exhibitor) and second type with one in greenish blue color, 1929-34 Fifty Six, Ark usages with different "56" numeral usages on six covers, other usages from Turkey, Figure Five, Forty Four, Hand, Star Bee, Tomato and Columbus, Ark., few pictorial not related to town name including two 1933 Pumpkin Pictorial cancels used from Columbus on Halloween (one day only postmark); a nice collection of these scarce to very rare 20th century fancy cancels.

Forest City, Vicksburg & Napoleon, U.S. Mail Packet. Red oval handstamp on cover to Elcho, La., lack of postage and postal markings suggests this cover contained a bill of lading and thus transmitted free of postage charge, Very Fine and rare.
Milgram No. unlisted; Estimate $200 - 300.

Napoleon was a major transfer point at the mouth of the Arkansas River. Much of the river transported mail from the northern half of Arkansas passed onto the Mississippi River at Napoleon.

The packet "Forest City", built in Brownsville, Pa. in 1851, is listed on the Vicksburg & Napoleon route (Star Route #8167) from August to December 1858 when the contract belonged to William Porterfield. US$200-300 (Image)

Symbol: Batesville, A.T., May 31st. Manuscript postmark on folded letter datelined "May 10th, 1833, Territory of Arkansas" from William Woodruff to Robert Toland in Philadelphia, Pa., Very Fine and choice, this is one of ten reported Batesville covers from the Arkansas Territorial period.
Estimate; $150 - 200.

The addressee, Robert Toland, lived in Philadelphia and purchased many military bounty land patents for Arkansas Territory between 1820 and 1822. William E. Woodruff served as his agent in Arkansas, paying his taxes and administering the property from roughly 1825 until at least 1842. It is unlikely Toland ever traveled to Arkansas. US$150-200 (Image)

Manuscript postmark on 1832 folded letter to Greenland, N.H., with matching Paid and "25" rate, enclosure signed by General Matthew Arbuckle, the commander stationed Fort Gibson, letter regarding the death of officer and arrangements being made to the return of the body; cover with some small edge nicks and tears at bottom, Very Fine.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

In 1827, the post office department put the area now in Eastern Oklahoma under the supervision of the Arkansas Postal Authorities. Fort Gibson was one of the first locations to receive a post office. The initial post office name was Cantonment Gibson, with both "Fort" and "Cantonment" designations used for several years. The Post Office Department officially changed the name to Fort Gibson on September 14th 1842. US$300-400 (Image)
