1734-59 Entire letters to London both backstamped "DARK / ING" with Bishop Marks, charged 3d. Fine strikes of the first Dorking handstamp (SY 150), used c.1720-34 and then reused in 1759-60. (2).

1748-1840 Entire letters, entires and covers with various Dorking handstamps including straight line or curved "DARKING" type SY 155 (2), 159 (2), 167, 179, 173 (2) and an unlisted 45x6mm handstamp of 1782, "24 DARKING" (2, SY 164), later mileage marks, undated circles in blue, Uniform 4d Post (2), etc. Also a 1748 hand delivered letter and 1767 map. 1772 (Nov 28) Entire letter to Ryegate, sent by cross post with a 1d charge and manuscript "Dorking" on reverse. A rare and previously unrecorded manuscript post town endorsement; no Dorking handstamp is recorded between 1714 and 1778. Photo on Page 56. (Image1)

Jamaica. 1795-1808 Entire letters to William Perrin all concerning his estates in Jamaica, one 1806 letter with light Jamaica fleuron sent to London and redirected to Dorking, the others from London or Bristol to Dorking and redirected to West Farleigh or London, all with Dorking handstamps including curved type SY 170 (6) and mileage marks. Frees/Money Letter. 1839 (Oct 12) Free letter from Dorking to London, headed "Money Letter" by the sender, again endorsed "Money Letter" in red. A very unusual free franked Money Letter. Photo on Page 56. (Image1)

Mulready. 1840 (Nov 20) 1d Mulready lettersheet stereo A22, containing an advert for R.B Ede with illustrations of perfume boxes and ink bottles, posted to the Stamp Office in Brighton with red Maltese Cross cancel, Dorking and Brighton backstamps. Light vertical fold, possibly a little reduced at base, otherwise fine. A scarce advert, that refers to Ede's Manufactory at Dorking. MA428a.

1840 (July 15) Cover to London bearing a 1d black, BE plate 2 (three good margins, touched at base) with a fine red Maltese Cross, redirected to Henley on Thames prepaid in cash with a red Paid datestamp and "Gt. Marybone St / 1py P. Paid", Dorking backstamp, tape stains to upper and lower edges, refolded to hide these, good appearance and unusual. Also a piece bearing a 1d black, BI plate 4 with four margins, tied by a red Maltese Cross, Dorking backstamp. (2).

1840 (June 10) Entire to Reigate bearing an 1840 2d blue, OA plate 1 with four margins (close at upper right) tied by a red Maltese Cross, blue Dorking backstamp.

1842-1965 Covers and cards including 1845 and 1852 skeleton datestamps in blue, Surface Printed frankings (7) including 9d on 1872 cover to New South Wales and 1892 cover to Germany with 1d + 1½d venetian red, 1851 cover with Great Exhibition embossed flap, 1883 Pitland Street c.d.s, sideways duplex, etc., also a few licences. 1852 (July 12) "Blessed Are The Peacemakers" envelope depicting a dove carrying an olive branch (published by Elihu Burritt's Olive Leaf Society), posted from Dorking to London with a 1d red (three margins) cancelled "257", Dorking and London backstamps. Natal. 1862-65 Covers to "Mrs G.A Wathen, Deepdene, Richmond, Natal", two sent by packet franked 6d or 1/-, the other with a 2d blue pair paying the ship letter rate endorsed "by Kaffraria ship letter", Dorking duplex cancels, all fine, an unusual destination. (3).

Parcel Post Labels. 1895-1931 Parcel Post labels from Dorking G.P.O (13), town sub-offices (7) and village sub-offices (35), 33 stamped, also a few rubber datestamps on piece. (55+).

1770-1910 Entire letters, entires, covers, cards and two fronts, mainly prestamp including 1770 letter with "RYEGATE" handstamp, "20 GOD / STONE" (2, part entire + front), straight line "GODSTON" (unlisted in BCC) and "GODSTONE" (SY 348), "19" and "20" mileage marks, mileage removed, boxed Penny Posts (3, one 4d Post Period, also proof strikes of unframed type), etc. Also 1686 London Gazette with postal notice for the post from London to Godstone, 1838 receipt from the "White Hart", Godstone Station c.d.s (2) and duplex, etc. (37).

Mulready. 1841 (Oct 30) 1d Mulready lettersheet stereo A6 to Reigate, black Maltese Cross cancel, Godstone and Reigate backstamps, unobtrusive vertical file fold, otherwise fine and attractive.

QV-QEII Covers and cards, mainly post-war with many postage due covers, explanatory marks and other covers from Reigate and Redhill, a few earlier covers including entire from Epsom to Brentford sent by cross post via Kingston with red handstruck "1D" (SY 251, only recorded in 1841), 1895-1907 covers to the Captain of the Reigate Fire Brigade with enclosed letters on fire brigade business (c.50, 22 with Red Hill Station Office cancels), etc. (100s).

Reigate District. 1774-1959 Entire letters, entires, covers and cards including 1774 letter from Nutfield with "RYEGATE" handstamp, free franks from Merstham, undated circles of "LEIGH", "BROCKHAM GREEN" (2), "KINGSWOOD" (2), "CHIPSTEAD" (3), "NUTFIELD (10), "WOODHATCH" (5, two types), 1904 express cover from Banstead franked 4d, etc. (72).

Dorking District. 1827-1973 Entire letters, covers and cards, most from sub-offices of Dorking, including undated circles of "OCKLEY" (3), "CAPEL" (3), "NEWDIGATE" (3), "CHARLWOOD", WEST HUMBLE ST" (2), "FETCHAM", "FLINT HILL" (2), WESTCOTT" (6, two types), "MICKLEHAM" (3, two types), "HOLMWOOD" (9, two types), "ABINGER HATCH", also 1839 4d Post Period letter from Little Bookham with boxed "No. 1", 1911 Aerial Post card written from Ockley, 1869 Surface Printed covers from Holmwood to Italy (2) and 1896 cover to Fiji, 1890 Penny Post Jubilee envelope from Holmwood, 1871 registered cover from Ockley, skeletons and rubbers, etc. (125).

Banstead. 1840-46 Entire letters (3), an entire and cover comprising 1840 letter prepaid 1d in cash backstamped "+ / BANSTEAD / PAID" (SY 52), 1840 letter with a 1d stamp removed backstamped "+ / BANSTEAD" and an 1841 entire franked 1d backstamped "BANSTEAD", also 1843-46 letter and cover with red undated circle handstamps. The three straight line handstamps clearly locally made by the same individual, the Paid and unpaid handstamps with a cross above very similar but with differences to the lettering, the 1841 straight line handstamp apparently the previous "+ / BANSTEAD" handstamp with the cross removed. A remarkable and exceptionally rare group, the Paid handstamp probably the example recorded in the County Catalogue, the other two handstamps both unlisted and previously unrecorded, all three possibly unique. Betchworth. 1705-1920 Entire letters, covers and cards including 1705 free letter to London with a Bishop Mark, 1840 letter to Reigate bearing a 1d black NA plate 1a (four margins, close at top) tied by a red Maltese Cross, undated circles (11, two types), etc., also a 1920 railway parcel stamp. (25).

Bletchingley. 1736-1957 Entire letters, entires, covers and cards including 1736 letter to Devon charged 7d, 1770 free letter to London with "RYEGATE" and red circular "FREE", 1815 entire with rare "P. PAID" (SY 69, only recorded in 1815), 1840 letter with scarce "PAID" (SY 68, only recorded in 1840), mileage marks, mileage removed type, undated circles (4, two types), 1907 registered cover with undated handstamp on registration label, 1908 card endorsed "Found in a parcel in London & brought to Bletchingley office by Mr Grice", etc. (42).

Bletchingley. 1840 (July 4) Wrapper (side flaps removed) with printed heading "Royal Naval Female School" posted within London franked by a 1d black, LL plate 2 (cut into at sides) tied by a red Maltese Cross, the wrapper then turned and posted on July 6th to Blenchingly franked by a 1d black vertical pair, SF-TF plate 4 (with three good margins, touched at left) each cancelled by a red Maltese Cross. The wrapper was again turned and reposted to the original addressee in London prepaid 1d in cash, handstamped straight line "BLETCHINGLEY" and "PAID" (SY 68, only recorded in 1840) with a Godstone (July 7) backstamp, a red Paid arrival datestamp tying the original 1d black. A remarkable item, postally used three times with single and pair of 1d blacks, and cash payment with the scarce Bletchingley Paid handstamp. Photo on Page 58. (Image1)

Limpsfield. 1798-1908 Entire letters, covers and cards including 1798 letter with straight line "GODSTONE", framed (3) or unframed "Godstone / Penny Post" with boxed "No. 2", "LYMPSFIELD" undated circles (6, one to Canada, another to India franked 1/-), 1886 covers to Egypt with 2½d stamps cancelled at Godstone or Redhill Station Office, The Chart c.d.s (2), etc. (25).

Limpsfield. 1840-41 Entire letters to Reigate endorsed "X Post" with boxed "No. 2" and Godstone datestamps, both bearing 1d blacks, OJ plate 7 (torn out, touched at two places) tied by a red Maltese Cross, or QH plate 5 with four good margins tied by a black Maltese Cross, charged 2d with manuscript "More to Pay".
