Cat No:15a
1858-59 First Rouletted Issue 2d pale red Printed on Both Sides SG 15a with the 'reverse' inverted relative to the face, rouletting at left & cut from the sheet to largely preserve the design, neat GPO cds in blue, Cat £950. Gary Diffen's similar example sold for £480, and Don Pearce's stamp with the 'reverse' oriented the same as the face, sold for $895.
Rouletting of these issues was effected with hand-held wheels & the accuracy of the process was only as good as the clerk's hand-eye coordination. Stamps with roulettes clear of the design on all sides are rarely encountered. Many stamps were cut from the sheets using scissors on one or more sides in an effort to retain most if not all of the design. This is not so much a 'defect' as a consequence of haphazard workmanship. It was standard practice for sheets of stamps that were underinked, printed at an angle, or with otherwise unacceptable impressions, to be turned-over and printed on the other side. In this instance, the reason for the re-printing is not obvious: the impression on the 'reverse' is well-defined & correctly orientated. Gary Diffen stated that there are only three examples, all used, in private hands, plus two others in the Royal Collection. We support his comment that this stamp is easily confused with the similar error in the Second Roulettes (SG 24ab). (Image1)

Cat No:78a with
1868 Emergency Issue on Crown/SA Watermark Paper 'TEN PENCE' in Blue on 9d yellow SG 78a with the Watermark Reversed & Misplaced (with 'S' of the sheet-watermartk below), untidy numeral cancel, Cat £2000. Ex 'Dubois' (Part I): sold for SFr605 (possibly because it was described as having a "horizontal ironed crease", that is actually the heavily impressed horizontal watermark line). Harry Lower's, Michael Blake's and Don Pearce's examples sold for $2990 $2445 & $2275 respectively.
A rare stamp that is seriously underrated, in part because it is listed by Gibbons under the Large Star Watermark issue. Often characterised as an 'error', in the catalogue for the John Griffiths' sale, it was noted that this was a trial printing on the paper to be used for the new De La Rue 2d SG 152, issued in August 1868. We consider that it was either a trial printing or an emergency printing perhaps inadvertently on the new paper, and expect that all examples have the watermark reversed. Don Pearce believes that only two sheets were printed, a total of only 480 stamps. Gary Diffen has recorded about 40 examples, some of which are defective or 'dwarf' stamps. No unused examples have been recorded. (Image1)
