The rate was 6d per ½oz Great Britain letter (reduced to 4d per ½oz from 1.4.1900) plus 4d registration fee. (Image1)

1902 (Feb 15) The British South Africa Company, Rhodesia envelope with logo in red on side flap, registered to England with BSAC Small Arms 1d rose and Large Arms Die I 3d brown & blue and 1/- green & blue tied by largely fine Nothern Rhodesia 'FORT JAMESON' cds, superb Nyasaland 'CHINDE/F/MR 6/02/B.C.A' transit backstamp, London & Bournemouth 'REGISTERED' transits on the face where repaired with a pair of 'FOUND OPEN AND/OFFICIALLY SEALED' labels plus margin, then re-directed and 'BLANDFORD/AP 14/02' arrival on the reverse, minor edge marks. Although Rhodesia joined the UPU on 1.3.1901, the overseas letter rate remained at the pre-UPU 4d per ½oz level until reduced to 2½d on 1.12.1902. Thus, the rate was triple 4d per ½oz letter plus 4d registration fee. (Image1)

1902 (Nov 12) The Bulawayo Chronicle newspaper wrapper with annual subscription prices printed on reverse, to London with BSAC Arms Die I 1d scarlet & emerald x2 and Die II 6d mauve & rose tied by untidy Bulawayo cds, a little roughly opened at top & minor blemishes. The rate is unclear: Rhodesia joined the UPU on 1.3.1901, adopting its 1d per 2oz overseas newspaper rate. It is unlikely that this wrapper would have been able to hold 16oz of newspaper, and apparently paid double the pre-UPU 4d per ½oz letter rate. (Image1)

Bulawayo (1): '678' numeral in bars (Proud K1; recorded 10.11.1888 to 1.8.1891 only; latest recorded use), largely very fine large-part strike (numerals almost complete) on 1892-94 Small Bi-Colour Arms 4d black & chestnut. PO 1888; closed 15.10.1893; re-opened by early 1894. The PO was moved from Dawson's Store on 15.10.1893 when this was abandoned due to the Matabele War; it was re-established in the new township which sprung up after the BSAC troops captured the Matabele Gubulawayo Kraal on 4.11.1893, and later moved 3 miles south where the new Bulawayo PO was declared open on 1.6.1894. The '678' cancel is not known used after the Matabele War, and was possibly lost in the move. (Image1)
