PORTUGUESE INDIA: 1943 (June 25) cover endorsed on the flap from "Fortaleza de Aguada" (= Aguada Jail) & "Written in Italian", to the Red Cross in Geneva with Prince Henry 2½t solo tied by '.../BETIM' cds, Indian censor label tied by 'DHG/5' crowned cachet and German 'Geoffnet' label tied by Eagle 'X' cachet in red used in Paris, a couple of very minor blemishes. During 1939-40, three German merchant ships and the Italian 'Anfora' had taken refuge in the port of Mormugao, Goa because Portugal & its colonies were neutral. The German ships were found to be transmitting messages to U-Boats targetting Allied shipping in the Indian Ocean. On 9.3.1943 British & Indian forces launched Operation Creek covertly attacking the German ship 'Ehrenfels', killing the captain and setting the ship on fire. The crews of all four ships scuttled their vessels, were arrested by the Portuguese for mutiny & held at Aguada. The sender was a sailor from the 'Anfora'. (Image1)
