1897 Opening of new General Post Office building in Lima, American Bank Note Co. letter with details of the three stamps required (faults); photographs of Pancartambo suspension bridge and President de Pierola and a print of the G.P.O building (faults) sent to the printers to show the required stamp illustrations; a pencil drawing of the G.P.O building; original handpainted essays on thick card for the three values, the 1c and 2c stamps with separately applied handpainted vignettes all in the issued design, the 5c essay with incorrect printed vignette within the handpainted border with a cross through the vignette, all applied to thick card, the 5c essay handstamped "ENTERED", initialled and dated "3/25/97", the 1c and 2c essays with some ink marks around the painted design; and die proofs of the three stamps in the issued colours, die sunk on thin card, numbered "C364" - "C366", each marked "OK" and initialled with an April 1897 date, the 1c and 5c proofs with "imprint" written below, approx 160x130mm (1c and 2c) or 135x179mm (5c). c.1960 5s Revenue stamp inscribed "Extranjeria", stamp size essay superbly handpainted in purple and Chinese white, set within a card surround (53x96mm) within a paper folder, the card mount and folder cover both embossed "WATERLOW & SONS / LIMITED / SPECIMEN". Very fine and unique, from the papers of Waterlow artist Stanley D. Scott (see lot 766).
