Aden.", red "BOSTON PAID" cds, carried by British Packet at 39 c. rate on Cunard "Niagara", LONDON transit. Manuscript endorsement "N. J. Kindman's complis / Aden May 23rd 1859" for forwarding mails to Penang, a manuscript arrival endorsement on reverse. (Image)

1883 (Oct 7): 'The Eastern Telegraph Company' printed Telegram envelope sent registered to Mauritius bearing mixed issue franking of India 1865 2 a. brown-orange and 1882/90 3 a. brown-orange with two 'B' within bars obliterators, ADEN cds to left and four-lined dated Registration handstamp, 'R' in circle bottom right and to left red oval "REGISTERED MAURITIUS" datestamp (Oct 18). The envelope has had a new corner added at bottom right and peripheral edge faults at top, still an attractive and scarce item. (Image)

1884 (Feb 21): Official envelope from the Royal Italian Civilian Commissioner in Assab, Eritrea, addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Rome franked India 42 a., seven times the standard rate via Brindisi bearing 4 a. in a block of eight and pair plus pair 1 a., tied by 'B' in squared grid with "ADEN CANT" cds alongside. Two 4 a. at right creased, "SEA POST OFFICE D." and "ROMA" arrival backstamps. Envelope disinfected by slitting affecting two 4 a. adhesives. Rare origin, cert. Sorani (1998). (Image)

From a known correspondence by Bt. Lt. Col. G. de C. Morton after the assault and capture of Peiwar Kotal. Tear at top of envelope not affecting the adhesives, minor perforation issues at top, a rare cover from the Second Afghan War. (Image)

1820 (April): Entire to Venice from the Tripcovich correspondence bearing two-line "CATTARO / IN ALBANIA" despatch handstamp, faint two-line Venezia arrival backstamp. Ottoman Post Offices in Albania, 1871 (Oct): Outer letter sheet to Venice bearing Turkey 1871/72 20 pa. green and 1 pi. yellow perf. 5-11 tied by circular all-Arab handstamps of Scutari in blue (Coles & Walker fig. 3) with Austrian Post Office ANTIVARI cds (Oct 30) in transit alongside, black "P.D." deleted as the 1½ paid to the border only and taxed with Italy 1870 Postage due 10 c. and 60 c., tied by rectangular framed VENEZIA datestamps (Nov 5) on arrival. Italian Post Offices in Albania 1919 (July 1): Censored mourning envelope to Alexandria, Egypt franked with Italy Vittorio Emanuele III 5 c. (3), 10 c. (2) and 20 c. tied by fine "POSTE ITALIANE / HIMARA (ALBANIA)" cds, censor tape at left, on reverse framed three-line "VERIFICATO / PER CENSURA / VALONA" handstamp, BRINDISI transit and ALEXANDRIA arrival cds's. Some toning around some stamps and slight faults to periphery of envelope. A fine example of a scarce cancellation. (Image)

Austrian Post Offices in Albania 1870 (Sept 17): Outer letter sheet to Venice bearing 1869 Postage Due 1 pi. yellow-brown & red-brown perf. 5-11 paying the internal rate from Scutari cancelled by extremely fine "SCUTARI D'ALBANIE", franked with Austrian Levant Coarse Whiskers 5 s. red and 10 s. blue (2) tied by ANTIVARI cds (Sept 20) for onward transmission. VENEZIA arrival cds (Sept 26) on reverse. The addressee's name re-enforced and some ageing around Austrian issues. A scarce and attractive combination. Cert. A. Diena (1974). 1803 (Dec.11): Early entire letter from Andorra addressed to Mr. Jose Cortadellas (de Calaff) in Barcelona. Written in Catalan with interesting content: "My dear Sir, I receive your esteemed letter dated 6th of this month. I would like to tell you that the giver of this letter should not repair it and deliver what was necessary to release my registered letter and send me to say goodbye. You will have given me as much as I can to satisfy the said part of the money, whereupon Your Majesty will accommodate you and thank you for making the necessary arrangements so that you do not (to) do it but out of the good will that I have with those in your household and for being such good people." Fine and very early example of the merchant's postal service carried in bags by TRAGINERS and their mules or horses, to compete with the official mail for the lowest price.
