1894 Private Essays (circa) Large Format Queen & Sailing Ship Design imperforate sheetlet of 10 (5x2) in red-violet on thick unwatermarked ungummed wove paper, a few minor blemishes on the face. A similar very fine sheetlet sold at our auction of 27.3.2025 for $2318 (Sale 259 Lot 2036). This and the next lot are the last of these items consigned to us. These essays were submitted to the New Zealand Post Office by Charles Lewis MP of Christchurch and bear the inscription 'THE LEWIS ENGRAVING PROCESS' in the ribbon below the portrait. They are considered by some to be part of the development process resulting in the iconic 1898 Pictorials series, or could simply have been submitted as samples of his printing process. (Image1)
