POSTAL HISTORY: 1939-45 bundle of mostly civilian covers with virtually all-different censor labels comprising Little Torrance & Morenweiser (LTM) Types 4A - rated 8 - x4 with Boy Scout numbers 2 5 10 & 12; 5A - rated 8 - with numbers 7 & 8; 5Bb - rated 8 - x2; 6B - rated 10 - numbers 2 7 17 & 18; 6C - rated 8 - with numbers 1 2 10 12 16 & 27; 7B - rated 7 - tied by DH handstamps numbers 1020 1023 1033 & 1043; 7D - rated 6 - with part-'DD/25'-in-octagon; 8A2 - rated 6 - with DD/38; 8B - rated 5 - with DD28 32 & 35; 9C - rated 10 - with DD/46, on military 'privilege' envelope; and two different unlisted types with numbers 872 & 1768; condition variable but generally fine to very fine. A very desirable lot. [The WWII Handbook states that members of the Malta Boy Scouts assisted the censors, applying their numeral h/s - in a circle or unframed - to mail that was passed for transmission. We have used LTM types because they give rarity ratings. The two unlisted types are also unrecorded in the Handbook. They are both on stampless OHMS covers] (Qty 30) (Image1)

POSTAL HISTORY: 1939-40 registered civilian covers to Australia x2 (one with the stamp removed from the reverse) & Canada and a beautiful cover from Yugoslavia with '.../NOVI SAD' R label, the earliest of AU29/39 with large 'Passed by/Censor.' label tied by the rare vertical oval 'POST OFFICE/[arms]/MALTA' device impressed in red wax LTM #WS2 (rated 10; the cover a bit spotty), the others with fine to superb impressions of the 'POSTAL/CENSOR' device in red wax LTM #WS1 (rated 9). [The WWII Handbook at pp85 & 91 illustrates covers with the oval device. The latter is dated AU29/39, the same as here, which may be the earliest date for censored mail from Malta] (Qty 4) (Image1)

POSTAL HISTORY: 1941 (Apr 29) letter to Wales endorsed "By Special Air Mail" with KGVI 2½d blue & '[flags] - MALTA IS GRATEFUL/TO THE ROYAL NAVY/...' label both tied by Valletta cds, black/white 'OPENED BY/EXAMINER 22/MALTA' label (LTM #6B; rated 10) tied by light strike of the unframed '5' Boy Scouts h/s. A lovely cover. [The airmail rate was 1/3d per 1/2oz. We can't find a reference in the Malta Srudy Group's WWII Postal History to any 'special air mail' or similar. It is stated at page 8 that the airmail rate to GB was 1/3d per ½oz "and there was no concessionary rate for service personnel". The collection includes many covers from this correspondence, of which this is the only one so endorsed]
