Symbol:

Germany. Germany > Brandenburg: Joseph and His Brothers inflationary Jeton ("Josefs-Jeton" - "Joseph und Seine Bruder" teuerungsjeton), 1771-1772; struck in silvered brass; by Johann Christian Reich; 29mm, 5g. Obverse depicts Joseph (with right hand over sack of corn) and his brothers (kneeling before him) surmounted by German legend "LIEB DIE BRÜDER GOTT GIBTS WIEDER" (loosely translated as "The Brother Loves the G-d Who Gives Again"); below Joseph's hand is "RE KOR" and between the colonades "GOTT SEGNE EUCH" ("G-d Bless You"); below the image on two lines is "DANTES. 1772". On reverse is 15 lines of text, starting with "1771." and listing various food product costs; legend ends with "FÜRTH.". Coin alignment; thin planchet. Kirschner is hesistant to classify these jetons as anti-Semitic; some variations have an anti-Semitic tone, but others like this one are more restrained: it draws on the Biblical story of Joseph and the 7 year famine in Egypt, but in this version it inspires praise in G-d rather than blaming Joseph himself for the strife. In VF+; Brettauer-1930.

Lot No:102
Symbol:

Germany. Germany: Farewell/protest Medal for "Des Philanthropins" School of Frankfurt, 1979; tombak (no maker-mark), 80mm, 120.2g: the "Das Philanthropin zu Frankfurt am Main" (also known as "Real- und Volksschule der Israelitischen Gemeinde") was one of the largest and longest-lasting Jewish schools in Germany, founded in 1804 by Siegmund Geisenheimer (and inaugurated by Moses Mendelssohn); closed by the Nazis in 1942, the building was re-opened as an administrative center for the Jewish community in 1954 and sold to the municipality in 1978 (being subsequently re-opened again 2006 as part of the I. E. Lichtigfeld School). The medal commemorates the then sad occasion of the building's closure and is engraved a "Farewell Medal" on the obverse with the founding and ending dates of 1804 - 1979, and on the reverse a darkly comical image adorned with the legend "in the beginning there was the idea... in the end it was [just about] money". The grind-box says "Public Opinion". In UNC with a few traces of holder residue.

Militaria: WWII/Holocaust/Collaboration

Sale No: 7
Lot No:549

Cat No:Collection

Germany. Third Reich 'Ordnungspolizei' (regular police & emergency services) cigar box: brass colored metal-cased wooden box with emblem of the Nazi regime's police affixed on top; not maker-marked; 8 x 11.1cm, 213.2g. The emblem displayed is the definitive version bearing the left-facing eagle above a wreathed Swastika, adopted as the Orpo's emblem well before WWII. The base is covered in black felt. The Nazi-era regular German Police encompassed some 34 different functions, including forestry and foodstuffs - as well as military formations and participation in the implementation of the Holocaust. The Orpo was one of 3 police forces in the Third Reich (next to the Sicherheitspolizei (Sipo) "security police" which include the Gestapo, and the Sicherheitsdienst (SD) "security service [of the SS]") - all equally unsavory in the annals of the Holocaust: the Orpo fielded the "Police Battalions" tasked with the mass murder of Jews in the East, while the "Einstazgruppen", tasked with the same, were subordinated first to the SiPo and then to the SD (though it actually drew much of its manpower from the OrPo); the "green police" as Anna Frank called them at the time of her arrest, were members of the OrPo (whose uniform was green). The lower-right top edge of the wooden inncer-case has been chipped off; there are apparent glue marks on the left and right inner walls of the wooden box. Unusual.
