Cole Sutton Royal Navy one while on HMS Furious refitting in the USA (1941) then two July 1942 letters from HMS Manchester on convoy duty to Malta; the ship was hit in an air raid, docked in Tunisia and the crew seized by the Vichy French. Aug. 1942 from family at Exmouth, Devon to Sutton, returned with typed label "Please note the addressee is now a prisoner of war." tied by red ADMIRALTY hs plus Aug/Sep/Oct 1942 env. + letters from Sutton to his family from Camp des Internes Britanniques, Laghouat (Algeria). MALTA - OPERATION PEDESTAL: NAVAL SIGNALS WITH GRAPHIC DETAILS OF BATTLE; 13-14 Aug. 1942 four complete original messages on "NAVAL MESSAGE" forms (full transcripts included) sent to/from British warships engaged in this vital and successful last attempt to relieve the embattled Malta. Report sent from the aircraft carrier, HMS Indomitable ("...Lift blown up and distorted. Mess decks below gutted...Flight deck out of action. Six Officers [+] 60 men killed...") to Vice Admiral Syfret, plus two from Syfret and one from Flag Officer of the 10th Cruiser Squadron with similar eye-witness accounts of bombardments and damage/losses.
