CONVICTS' SENTENCES; 25 Oct. 1790 EL franked from "Corfe Castle" to Evan Nepean (Under Secretary of State for the Home Office and friend of the 1st Governor of N.S.W., Arthur Philip) in London with a mainly fine rare "108 POOL D" 1st-Type Mileage and a fine strike of the equally rare brown encircled "FREE/A/[laurel leaves]" mark on the front. The contents regard some local gaol prisoners who had been sentenced to transportation (to N.S.W.) but for whom a change of sentence was sought to enable them to work on local Dorset projects. LEGAL, PRISONS, ETC.. GUERNSEY - 'ANTI-GRAHAM' PROPAGANDA COVER WITH 1d RED TIED BY "GUERNSEY/324" DUPLEX; 27 Dec. 1869 small env. (some wear; part flap lost) addressed to Plymouth with a 1d Red (pl.110) tied by a partly fine Guernsey duplex having a remarkable printed propaganda text on the front in French which translates as "PENAL CODE, BOOK III, TIT. I, ART. 187. All suppression, or opening, of letters consigned to the Post... by... the postal administration, will be punished by a fine from 16 francs to 300 francs...". Reminiscent of the Anti-Graham campaign of 1844 aimed at the London Secret PO. The only example of this propaganda envelope that we have recorded.
