COMMERCIAL. RARE USED "Post Magazine" LETTER-SHEET WITH 4m 1d BLACK SENT LOCALLY IN LONDON; Very fine 22 Aug. 1840 usage of a Post Magazine (unnumbered no.5? - with one of the 3 extra inner pages) with Plate 1b 4m 1d Black (OF) tied by a very fine orange-red London Maltese Cross (matching ds on top flap) with partly fine black "T.P/Whitechapel" alongside. There is a light horizontal fold across the address, but otherwise in unusually fine condition. The multiple adverts on the second half of the double-width sheet include a Life Insurance Co. advert which has seemingly been ink-boxed by the sender, a Mr. "Thos. D. Glascott", who invites the addressee to dinner at 5pm the next Wednesday. [RPSL Cert. (2007) which states that "the stamp has been lifted and re-affixed and the obliteration improved at the top [but] is Genuine"]. Exhibition Item. COMMERCIAL. RARE COMPLETE USED "Post Magazine" LETTER-SHEET WITH 1d BLACK SENT FROM LONDON; 26 Sept. 1840 usage of Post Magazine (19 Sept. 1840 no.9 - with all three extra inner pages) with near 4m 1d Black (JD; touched at top left) seemingly tied by a very fine Experimental black London Maltese Cross (possibly not the original stamp; and so is offered for sale here 'as is' - not subject to return) with partly very fine red "T.P/Greenwich EO" alongside. The address has been erased and re-written (and is rebacked where the erasure thinned the paper); supposedly to a genuine firm in Shaftesbury, but the only backstamp is the local London mark in red, so the original address was almost certainly within central London. However, it is rare to find the full set of inner pages still complete, and the hand-written letter (from "Greenwich Hospital") asks for extra time to pay a seemingly sizeable debt.Cross Reference: ADVERTISING ENVELOPES, 1840 1d BLACKS, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY (Image)

Rare example of a large single-sheet letter weighing no more than a ½oz, and an attractive 1d Black. COMMERCIAL. VERY RARE 1840 2d BLUE COVER WITH PRINTED CONTENTS - REF. "ROYAL MANCHESTER INSTITUTION" LECTURES; 25 June 1840 EL sent from "MANCHESTER" (fair red cds on top flap) to Bolton franked by a Plate 1 1840 2d Blue (ND; good to wide margins on 3 sides; shaved along LH side) tied by a very fine orange-red Manchester Maltese Cross. The fine printed contents consist of a syllabus of the upcoming R.M.I. Lecture series on "NATURAL HISTORY" along with a covering printed letter mentioning an enclosed ticket (not present). Presumably the printed card ticket took the weight above the half ounce and so the 2d rate was needed. We cannot recall having seen an 1840 2d Blue cover with printed contents before.
