1693 (May 4) Entire letter from the Earl of Westmoreland addressed "for Major Buffkin at Loose near Cocksheath", presumably carried by official messenger. The letter asks Buffkin to "joyne with us in ye servis of their majesties" by joining the Regiment of Foot commanded by Sir Thomas Roberts.

Prestamp to QEII stamps and covers including c.1770 entire to the British Coffee House, 1881 cover franked Foreign Bill 1d, 1868 advertising cover for "The Howe Sewing Machine", 1848 entire franked 1d red and reposted at the 1890 Penny Postage Jubilee celebration at the Guildhall franked 1d lilac, 1855 Leith experimental duplex, 1860 cover to India franked 1d + 4d (2), other surface printed covers, royal covers, KEVIII and KGV covers, etc. Also some ephemera. 1745-1888 Post Office Notices (3), newspapers and Parliamentary Returns concerning ship or packet letters, the P.O Notices comprising 1854 Mails to Australia to be sent by the sailing vessel "James Baines" as the Screw Steam Shipping Co is unable to provide a steam vessel to carry the mails in December, 1880 Ship Letter rates to and from G.B, 1884 Brazil and River Plate resumption of regular mail service; also 1745 London Gazette containing a notice on the West Indies packet service, 1859 69 page Parliamentary Return on mails to and from British North America, etc. (13).

Forwarding Agents. 1795-1845 Entire letters from or to G.B sent via forwarding agents, including 1820 letter from Liverpool to Rouen addressed via agents in Dover and Calais, 1811-13 letters from Spain to London both with Plymouth Ship Letter handstamps and endorsed by the Plymouth agents Fox & Sons or Gould & Oloez, 1808 letter to Oporto forwarded by Thomas Heather of Portsmouth, 1845 letter from a German ship in the North Sea forwarded by Edward Iggulden, Bremen Vice Consul in Deal, etc. (7).

c.1809-1929 Covers and cards, mainly 1d red covers, including 1812 free entire signed by George Canning, 1809 entire letter with red boxed "4PP of the Manchester Penny Post, 1839 4d Post period entire from Petworth to Midhurst prepaid 2d, etc., also a few later covers and some ephemera. (c.200).

Ireland. 1826-57 Entire letters and entires with Paid handstamps (13), Dublin "2" charge mark and "POSTED SINCE 5PM / TN RECR / LAST NIGHT" duplex or Dublin signet ring datestamp, also 1885 card with Cork hooded circle datestamp. (16).

c.1830-1930 Covers (c.350) and picture postcards (c.600) in two boxes with postal stationery, 1d red covers, c.d.s and machine cancels, etc. (c.950).

1843-55 Small size covers, the largest 12x7cm with some as small as 9½x4cm, all used with imperf 1d reds (15 with four margins), an unusual group. (22).

1845-1970 Covers comprising 1845 G.P.O letter to New York requesting 1/- postage on a letter detained at the Inland Post-Office; 1847 G.P.O Remittance Letter of Acknowledgement posted to Canterbury; 1895 G.P.O letter to the Director of Posts in Montevideo sent with a returned A.R form; 1933 letter posted within London with unusual red unframed "DELAYED THROUGH BEING / POSTED IN A LETTER BOX / FOR "LONDON" LETTERS / PLEASE ADVISE SENDER" (with relevant P.O Notice); and 1970 (Mar 3) cover and letter posted at Stampex, delivered in July with enclosed slip "mail was stolen and has just been returned to us by the police". An interesting group. (6).

Duplex Cancels. 1855-c.1900 Covers (c.125) and pieces, the covers including sideways duplexs (51), Scottish dotted duplexs (18), experimental duplexs (7) and "Posted Since" duplexs (2, also a datestamp), Worcester spoon, also hundreds of pieces in number order stuck into a large album. (100s).

1856-71 Covers and entires (32) and pieces (26) with "Posted Since" duplex cancels or datestamps, the covers with handstamps of Edinburgh (25), Glasgow (2), Liverpool (4) or Dublin, a few faults though most are fine. (32+)

Constantinople. 1859-1909 Entire letters or covers from G.B to Constantinople, the 1859 letter with 1/1 paid in cash and a 1d red applied to pay a late fee with arrival backstamp of the Austrian P.O, the others all with British P.O arrival backstamps, five 1865-71 letters franked 6d or 1/-. (9).

Squared Circles. c.1883-1910 Picture postcards and a few covers all with squared circle cancels, provincial offices sorted alphabetically in a box (c.500), London head, branch and district offices in an album (104), all different, fine strikes with some scarcer offices. (c.600).

1901-76 Returned Letter Office envelopes (24) and a front including 1901 large blue registered envelope with contents from Manchester, 1964 envelope with 1/9 charge for compulsory registration, 1913-16 London R.L.S registered envelopes, etc., also two Irish envelopes and a British R.L.O envelope used in Dominica in 1987, all identified by type from the Snelson and Galland book. 1902-11 Picture postcards with mainly KEVII stamps, all with double ring datestamps, sorted into alphabetical order in four boxes, apparently all different (c.1,650). Also an album with duplexs, squared circles, machines, etc. (c.1,350).

Covers, maps and ephemera, including 1890 imitation Mulready Christmas card produced as a souvenir of the Penny Postage Jubilee (corner crease), House of Commons covers and cancels, a good range of antique maps of counties (122, also a few foreign maps), official souvenir book of the Franco-British Exhibition, forces mail in an album, 1891-1924 correspondence from a British army officer including 1920-22 covers from Ireland, etc. (100s).

Acts of Parliament. 1684-1840 Acts concerning the posts (26) and newspapers containing postal notices (11), some acts covering many areas of the posts, others specific acts and notices dealing with the franking privilege, London Penny Post, registration on letters to and from abroad, new postal rates, packets between Great Britain and Ireland, mail coaches to be exempt from tolls, ship letters, newspapers and printed papers, etc. Also an 1862 poster announcing future tolls on the Crickley Hill & Campsfield turnpike road to be sold by auction. 1887-1901 Covers and entire letters (12), postcards (2) and parcel post labels (6), various inland rates including 2d registration envelope franked 4d with oval "EXPRESS" handstamp, 3d Notice of Objection rate, registered covers sent at 3d, 3½d, 4d or 5d rates, parcel post labels franked 4d, 5d, 6½d, 7d or 11d, etc. (20).

1892 (July 8) Printed postcard sent at the ½d rate from Kings Lynn to Derringham, the front headed "North-Western Division of Norfolk Parliamentary Election", with some results of six years of Unionist rule printed on the reverse (120,000 additional allotments for labourers, pensions and votes given to Police, defensive forces increased by 60,000, 112 additional naval ships, peace restored to Egypt, African slave trade checked, two million square miles added to Empire in Africa, etc). The opened card gives details of where to vote and why one should vote for Lord Bentinck with a superb printed picture of Bentinck surrounded by flags, patriotic symbols and pictures of Salisbury, Devonshire, Balfour and Chamberlain. Very unusual and attractive.

1892-96 Tie-on parcel tags, two registered from London franked 4d, others from Preston franked 3d + 4d or from London franked 3d block of six both with boxed Parcel Post datestamps, unusual. (4).

Postal Fiscals. 1893-94 Size K 2d registration envelope from London to Germany franked 4d + 10d + 1d postal fiscal (type FI2 die I); and 1894 cover from Birmingham to France franked ½d (2) + 4½d + 1d red plate 171 strip of three + 1d postal fiscal (type F8, watermark single lined cabled Anchor). Two unusual frankings, the scarce K size envelope with vertical folds, the 1894 cover a late use of the 1864-79 1d red. (2).
