POSTAL HISTORY: 1941 (Nov 10) usage of Great Britain Reply Postal Card KGV 1½d brown reply-half with KGVI 1d red added, returned to England from internee "Rosa Sorinolew" in south-western France with message in German to her son, 'CAMP DE GURS' cds and 'MINISTERE L'INTERNEUR/DIRECTAUX DU CAMP DE GURS/CENSURE' oval censor cachet in violet, light soiling & some bends. A remarkable & poignant Reply Postal Card usage. Some 4000 German Jews living in France were interned as 'enemy aliens' at the beginning of WWII; Rosa's son Walter had earlier escaped to England, possibly on a Kindertransport. After the Vichy government signed an armistice with Nazi Germany, many of Camp de Gurs' Jewish internees were deported east - the majority to Auschwitz - and murdered. (Image1)
