(2, one with italic “2”, 4s., used, (Mar.) to 2s. with 2d. strips of three (2), 4d. pair imperf. between (R.P.S. certificate, 1989, notes “partly rejoined”) mint, 8s. (corner fault) with 6d. on piece, small datestamp cancellations, poor to fine. (27)

Sudan: ??1875 (Feb. 5) single page autograph letter handwritten and signed by Colonel Charles Gordon to “My dear Mr. Gegler” conferring some “Illustrateds” (Illustrated London News) and requesting a receipt for monies paid to Josef Menges. Also the envelope (Menges’ personal ‘bee’ stationery), locally hand delivered without postal markings, addressed to Giegler.In 1873 Gordon (1833-1885) accepted service under the Khedive Ismail as Governor-General of the Equatorial Province of the Suda where he did much to suppress revolts and the local slave trade, resigning and returning to Europe in 1880. Later, due to the serious led by Muslim religious leader and self-proclaimed Mahdi, Muhammad Ahmad, Gordon was sent back to Khartoum with instructions to secure the evacuation of loyal soldiers and civilians and to depart with them but opted to stay to defend the city, a decision that was to lead to his death. Carl Christian Giegler (1844-1921) was a German-born telegraph engineer appointed Director of the Post & Telegraph Department in Khartoum and later himself as Governor-General from February to May 1882. Self-made naturalist and explorer Jakob Josef Menges (1850-1910) had applied to Gordon to act as his secretary, subsequently assisting Gordon with the mapping of the upper Nile and establishing a line of stations along the river as far south as present-day Uganda. Sudan: 1888 incoming mourning “The Graphic” envelope sent Dec. 18 from London addressed to “The Hon. Gerald de Saumarez/Suakim/Red Sea” franked 1/2d. vermilion and 1d. lilac (2) with “GRAPHIC” perfins, with Dec. 26 Suez transit and Sawakinn arrival on reverse, some faults but unusual. The Hon. Gerald le Marchant de Saumarez (1859-1941), 4th son of the 3rd Baron de Saumarez, a talented artist and former officer was following the Campaign for the journal and had been present at the pivotal Battle of Suakin on Dec. 20.
