1911 Second German Antarctic Expedition, postcard with Falkland Islands KEVII 1d tied by South Georgia cds as well as the expedition vignette tied by "Polarschiff Deutschland / Süd Georgien / Grytyiken / 30. November 1911" to Hamburg. The card was written and signed by expedition leader Wilhelm Filchner and several other crew members to the recipient Ballin, Hamburg. A rare historical document for the polar or Falklands collector. (Image)

1928 (Oct 29) Wilkins Antarctic Expedition cover with Falkland Islands 1d tied by Port Stanley cds and "Deception Island" cachet adjacent, then re-used in 1931 and carried to England on the Wilkins-Ellsworth Trans-Arctic Submarine Expedition, with large violet cachet, franked with KGV 1 1/2d tied by London cds to the US, then redirected to New York; cert. 1878-1935 mint collection neatly presented on stock sheets with a useful group of QV issues incl. 1878 6d and 1/-, 1885 1d (3) and 4d, 1889 1d and 4d, 1891 to 1/- (3) with numerous shades (both 9d, 4 x 6d incl. SG 33 and reversed wmk) and 1898 2/6d and 5/-. 1937-52 mint collection on stock pages with the 1938 set to £1 plus shades (there are 5 x 1/-, 4 x 5/-, 5 x 10/ incl. SG 162a etc), with the 1952 set, Wedding etc. A particularly useful batch of the Dependencies 'Map' includes many of the listed varieties and we note SG G1aa, G2aa, b and d, G4b, G5c, G6b and c, G7c and G8c. Falkland Islands Dependencies: 1981 stock of covers from the 1980-81 expedition of the German research ship "Meteor". These are all on printed ship's envelopes, have two F.I.D. definitive stamps, and a variety of cachets. These from one of the ship's crew in 1981, and this is the remaining stock. An interesting aspect of these is that many of the covers have an alternative type of South Georgia postmark, which has caused some scepticism among specialists. There are 376 covers, of which 79 have the recognised cancel, and the 297 others the second type (all these also with Grytviken cachets). Also included are other covers from the expedition from B.A.T. (20), Argentina (5), and Chile (9), an interesting assembly for the specialist. (Image)
