Cat No:Columbian 1892
Columbian 1892 (Proof PR60??). In the original leather pouch with embossed gold leaf lettering commemorating the 1892-93 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. A few proof Columbian Halves of both 1892 and 1893 were struck for the exposition as special keepsakes and it is believed by some that the proofs were distributed in these handsome leather pouches. The present coin contained in the pouch shows excellent detail and lightly mirrored surfaces suggesting that it might be one of the 1892 proofs. There is deep toning on the coin which likely indicates that it has been stored in this pouch roughly since the time it was struck. (A cursory internet search yielded little in the way of useful additional information on proof vs. non-proof status.) The coin may turn out to simply be a well-struck business strike; however, this could be a minor point given that the pouch itself is very rare and this item alone may be worth a generous bid!
