From U.S. Steam Ship Colorado, Gulf Blockading Squadron, Off South West Pass, April 30, 1862. Endorsement at top of cover addressed to Salem, Mass., blue "Due 3" in circle handstamp applied in transit; light cover staining and corner wear, Fine.
Estimate; $150 - 200.

This letter would have landed at Port Royal and put onto one of the supply ships sailing north. It probably went on to Fortress Monroe in a closed bag on it's way to Baltimore. It was there that the postage "Due 3" marking was applied on it's way to Salem.

U.S. Steamer Emma, North Atlantic Blockading Squadron of Beaufort, N.C. Address on cover franked with 1861, 3¢ rose (65) tied by "Flushing, N.Y., Apr 1, '64" cds and target duplex; cover reduced at right, Very Fine.
Estimate; $150 - 200.

The "Emma" was captured on July 24th, 1863 by the Army transport SS "Arago" off the coast of Wilmington, N.C. and was purchased by the Navy from the New York City prize court on September 30th, 1863. "Emma" arrived at Newport News, Va. in November of 1863 to patrol with the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron until the end of the war.
