Canada: Newfoundland: 1873 cover to Hampshire endorsed “By St Johns, Newfoundland” franked 1868-73 6c. rose paying reduced 1/2oz. rate with fine “PAID/LIVERPOOL/BR PACKET/5 SP 73/3A” in red, backstamped Aug. 15 St John’s despatch and with fascinating enclosed ten page letter first headed “Church ship ‘Lavrock’/12 miles north of Canada Bay/North east coast of/Newfoundland/Begun Aug 2nd” and subsequently extended from “Tilt Cove” sent by John Frewen Moor to his family, repaired at top but most unusual. Moor, a student at the Theological College in St John's and trainee missionary, accompanying the Bishop of Newfoundland, James Butler Knill Kelly, on the expedition to Labrador, later drowned on the expedition after his boat capsized between Griquet and Quirpon on Nov. 12 1874.
