Lot No:759
Symbol:
1859: 12½ c. blue-green, a vertical strip of three in a rich deep shade, positions 49/59/69, used on 1864 cover to Galway, Ireland endorsed "By Canadian Mail", tied by blue grid cancels with "STREETSVILLE / C.W." despatch cds in blue at left (Aug 16). Carried on the Allan Line steamer "Hibernian" and, on arrival in Galway (Aug 31) forwarded on to Derry with 1864/79 1 d. red pl. 72, four examples for 2 ounce rate, all tied bx Galway "232" numeral obliterators. On arrival the clerk realised original rate was underpaid and struck the cover with "9" (pence) due marking in black, this deleted in red crayon and altered to "1/-" in manuscript. The cover sympathetically restored at top but a remarkable and most appealing cover. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image)
