1919 Trans-Atlantic Air Post 1919 ONE DOLLAR on cover to England, tied by a St John's N'fld JUN.9.1919 roller cancel. A Harbour Grace JU.14 cancel is below the stamp. This cover was on the Hanley Page 'Atlantic' that was entered for the £10,000 Daily Mail prize to fly across the Atlantic. This was abandoned and on July 2nd the crew decided to fly to Gibraltar. However this too was abandoned and they set of for Mitchell Field, Long Island, New York on July 4th. Serious engine trouble forced the plane down and it crashed near Parrsboro, Nova Scotia on July 5th. A few minor cover faults but scarce with only 101 covers flown. (Image)
