Lot No:933
Symbol:

John C. Fremont. Elaborate design featuring a three-quarter portrait along with scenes of exploration and Indian fighting in the West, with John Andrew artist credit plus "J. E. Tilton & Co., Boston" imprint (deleted in pen), on cover franked with 1861 3Ā¢ rose (s.e. at left) tied by framed "Paid" cancel, red "Boston, Mass, Sep 21" double circle postmark, to Portland, Maine, with the address written mostly on paper pasted over another address (to Austria), Very Fine. EstimateĀ  $500 - 750. The basic design on this cover can be traced to Fremont's 1856 campaign against James Buchanan. However, this particular design references Fremont with his Civil War rank of "Major General", so the envelope must have been prepared in conjunction with Fremont's brief 1864 candidacy against the incumbent Abraham Lincoln. Fremont withdrew his candidacy on September 22, 1864, after Lincoln removed Postmaster General, Cabinet member, and Fremont adversary Montgomery Blair from office. $0 (Image)
