Freight Money Letter via Sailing Ship, 1840. Sailing ships were allowed to charge 12½ cents per sheet freight money, whereas steamships were allowed 25 cents per sheet. This cover was mailed at Baltimore where it was rated "75/50" for a quadruple sheet rate, as follows: inland quadruple rate postage Baltimore to New York 4 times 18? cents = 75 cents PLUS Freight Money sailing ship rate 4 times 12½ cents = 50 cents. On arrival at Liverpool the U.S. rates were canceled and a British charge of 1/4d was imposed, being a double ship letter rate of 2 x 8 pence; file folds, F.-V.F. Estimate $200 - 300. $0 (Image)
