Cunard Line "Andes" Only Transatlantic Voyage. San Francisco - Boston - Liverpool, Entire dated "16th/2nd 1854" from San Francisco from a stranded Capt. Henry Blyth who had lost his vessel the "Warrenton" and was stranded with his family in San Francisco. Reverse bears "AMERICA LIVERPOOL" green arrival stamp for March 19th 1854 and the "ART-5 B.R. PKT" stamp for the treaty rate related to letters from the west coast of the USA. Charged 1s.2½d. in compliance with the treaty; file fold, otherwise Very Fine. Estimate  $400 - 600. The "Andes" was the first iron hulled propeller driven steamship constructed for Cunard. Not intended for the transatlantic service, she made only one trip to Boston leaving Liverpool 14th February 1854. She returned to Liverpool on the 29th March after which she was taken to the Crimea as a hospital ship. $0 (Image)
