Blue oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 12-3 with "Cty") struck twice with one strike tying Wells Fargo 1862 10¢ brown (right margin single, large to irregular into design at bottom) on 1861 3¢ pink entire front only with black company frank, Sol. Wangenheim correspondence to San Francisco, 1862 use (first stamp period August 1862 to January 1863), repair above the stamp and closed tear at right, Very Fine appearance, An important and historic usage sent just 6 days after the advertised first trip of the Virginia Pony. Blue oval handstamp tying Wells Fargo & Co., 1862-64, 10¢ brown right margin single (large margins to touching frameline at left) on 1861 3¢ pink entire with black company frank, entire with additional strike of Virginia Cty oval & addressed to San Francisco, endorsed "Pony" below adhesive, top right corner of entire torn off & replaced with what appears to be the original corner, top flap replaced, 1979 P.F. cert. makes no mention of the corner, but mentions "stamp, with internal faults", however we see no evidence of this under magnification, Very Fine appearance, ex-Kramer. Blue oval handstamp (Leutzinger type 12-3 with "Cty") struck twice with one strike tying Wells Fargo 1864 25¢ red (four clear to mostly large margins) on 1861 3¢ pink entire with black company frank to San Francisco street address, with mining business letter datelined "Feby 19th 1865", some professional edge restoration, Extremely Fine appearance, two 1860's postal covers to the same addressee in San Francisco accompanyEstimate 2,000-3,000. Scott No. 143L9  Estimate $1,000 - 1,500. The Virginia Pony was terminated in July of 1864 because the roads had been improved to the extent that stagecoaches were making just as good time as the pony riders. However, the following winter, after storms fowled the roads, the premium service was revived for another two months. The last gasp of the Virginia Pony was from December 29, 1864, to March 2, 1865. $0 (Image)
