United States -- Lot of 14 1850s-61 transatlantic stampless covers addressed to Capt. Charles H. Townsend Impressive lot of 14 covers filled with postmarks, rate marks, receivers and way marks all addressed to sea Captain Charles Townsend. No content. Includes a period newspaper clipping mentioning Townsend and the Bavaria . Charles Hervey Townsend was born in New Haven, Connecticut. After first going to sea around age 15, he served as an officer on merchant ships throughout the 1850s. Townsend became a captain around 1856 and commanded the Bavaria and Germania. He received letters from family members throughout the 1850s. Correspondence largely concerns the Civil War and its influence in Connecticut and London. They mention the expectation of war as early as November 1860 and commented on developments throughout the conflict. He died in 1904. Great historic and philatelic value. (Image1)
