Cat No:4
1853 Couriers 1d blue on Thin Hard Paper SG 4, margins good to large with full outer framelines, heavily cancelled but well clear of the Queen's face, Cat £1300. Superb. RPSofL Certificate (1998) as SG 4 but we query the identification. It is on thin but not particularly "hard" paper, and it's a very early impression with "the lines clear and distinct", as SG 2 (Cat £1500).
1853 Couriers 4d red-orange Plate I Second State with Blurred Lines SG 7 [Pos 7], margins close to good, BN '59' of Launceston, very fine; also 4d dull orange Plate II SG 11 horizontal pair [21-22] with clipped corners, BN '18' of Campbell Town; and 4d yellowish orange SG 12 [17], margins good to large, indistinct bars cancel & part-GPO Hobart Town cds in red; Cat £1600. BPA Certificate (2014) for the first but as SG 8.

1853 Couriers 4d Plate II complete sheet (6x4) from the defaced plate with imprints 'Printed by H&G Best' at lower-left & 'CW Coard Sc' at lower-right, in pale dull orange on thick wove paper. Superb: not even hinged on the reverse.
1855 London Printings Large Star Wmk 1d carmine SG 14, full margins just clear to close, tiny natural paper inclusion towards the top that is of no importance, unused, Cat £14,000. Surely one of the finest unused examples of this rare classic stamp: almost the equal of the slightly larger 'Besancon' (III) example, that sold for SFr11,590. Ex Alfred Caspary. APEX (1997) and Chris Ceremuga (2016) Certificates.
1855 London Printings Large Star Wmk 2d green SG 16, margins close to good with a small burnishing mark in green at lower-right, scarce '4' handstamp of Macquarie Plains, Cat £450. Superb. Ex Wolfgang Kielmann. RPSofV Certificate (2017).
1856-57 No Watermark Pelure Paper 1d deep red-brown SG 21, margins close to good, minor Pre-Printing Paper Fold at lower-left, BN '64' of Hobart, Cat £800. Superb. Ex 'Dubois' (I): sold for SFr900. BPA Certificate (1997).
1857-67 Watermark Double-Lined Numerals 1d deep red-brown SG 25 with the Watermark Inverted horizontal strip of 4, margins just shaved - at right - to good, Second Allocation Barred Numeral '68' cancels of Hobart, Cat £220+. A spectacular multiple of this rich shade. Ex Alfred Caspary.
1857-67 Watermark Double-Lined Numerals 2d slate-green SG 34 horizontal strip of 3, margins good to large, large-part original gum, Cat £1350+, for unused singles. A very scarce multiple
1858 'TASMANIA' Large Star Watermark 6d dull lilac imperforate block of 4, unusually strong colour for this item, margins close to good, characteristic ironed-out creasing but of above-average colour and quality, Cat £3000+, for singles (in the footnote below SG 18, the issue inscribed 'Van Diemens Land'). Unissued. Ex 'Dubois' (I): sold for SFr730. BPA Certificate (1947) as the then SG 43.
1863-71 Experimental Separations Walch & Sons Perf 12 1d dull vermilion as SG 69 but with a Pronounced Double Print (not a kiss-print), unused. Rare. Ex Gary Diffen ("only a couple known") and 'Dubois' (I): sold for SFr390. RPSofV Certificate (2009) as the then SG 69a states "...double impression...is genuine". Unlisted by Gibbons: de-listed on the grounds that all were "kiss-prints", which is certainly not the case here.
1871-78 'TAS'-with-Lines Watermark Perf 11½ 1d dull rose Imperforate Vertical Pair SG 144a, margins just touched at lower-left where roughly separated by hand to huge, BN '52' cancels of Launceston, Cat £1800. Ex William Frazer (sold in 2003 for £1725) and 'Dubois' (I): sold for SFr915. Gary Diffen's pair, noted as "the finest of the five pairs recorded, two of which are faulty", sold for £1140.
1892-99 Tablets 'Colour Scheme' Appendix Sheet (168x282mm) dated "June 18th 1891" affixed to which are twelve Imperium essays inscribed 'POSTAGE - & REVENUE' in purple x8 or green x4 with the Value Tablet in various colours on Blank Field x4 or on Lined Field x8 each with 'TASMANIA' added by hand in Chinese white, the proposed denominations in manuscript alongside the essays, light stain at left from where the original artwork for the 2½d on tracing paper had been affixed. An outstanding exhibit. Ex De La Rue Archives: illustrated in the De La Rue work by Frank Walton RDP at page 6249. NB: the suggested denominations are from ½d to 10/-. The notation at the base states the 1d & 2d "...are included...although we believe it is proposed to produce [them] from the existing plates". The 1d & 2d were continued in the Sideface design. It was only in 1897, that the £1 was added to the series. Sold at our auction of 24.1.2004 for $49,280; the current estimate (a little over $800 per essay) represents a fantastic opportunity.
