Chalons Numeral Wmk group comprising Imperforate 1d carmine & 4d blue both with full margins with large-part original gum, plus 4d blue strip of 3 with bars cancels, Perf 12 4d blue & 6d purple with large part o.g. plus 1/- block of 4 fiscally used, condition fine to very fine but some of the 'unused' may have had fiscal cancels removed. 1853 Couriers 1d blue Early Impressions with All Lines Clear & Distinct SG 2 [6] from the right of the sheet with margins large to huge & full outer framelines, manuscript numeral "33" of Glenorchy (rated RRRR), small thin at upper-right, Cat £1500 plus a premium for the rare cancellation. 1853 Couriers 1d blue Early Impressions with All Lines Clear & Distinct SG 2, margins good to large with complete outer framelines, two part-strikes of a numeral cancel remarkably both clear of the Queen's portrait & small-part London transit/arrival cds in red, Cat £1500. Superb!
1853 Couriers Plate I Early Impressions with All Lines Clear & Distinct 4d bright red-orange SG 5 x2 (one just shaved at right), Intermediate Impressions 4d red-orange SG 7 x2, and Worn Impressions 4d paleorange SG 9, all cut-square & all but the first with full margins, small imperfections, the last two with BN '64' or '57', Cat £3475. 1853 Couriers Plate I Worn Impressions 4d dull orange SG 9, cut-square with margins good to large and complete 'Printed by H&C Best' Imprint at the base, large-part BN cancel well clear of the imprint, Cat £450 plus a significant premium for the imprint. [NB: most such stamps have the imprint trimmed or obscured by the cancellation] See the illustration above Lot 964.
1855 London Printings undenominated reprinted die proofs in black on wove paper x2 or thin card, with blank value tablet, with horizontal lines or with ornaments. Scarce. (3)
1860-67 'TASMANIA' Imperf 6d SG 44-48 group of 4 shades, all with full margins & all with fragments of one or two adjoining units, one with '1' cancel of Melbourne in blue, Cat £340.
1863-71 Chalons Double-Lined Numeral Watermark 1d dull vermilion Perf 12 as SG 69 but with Double Impression pair and strip of 3 on piece, five largely very fine strikes of Barred Numeral '92' cancels of Tunbridge, both left-hand units cut from the sheet (indicating that the pair originated from either above or below the left-hand side of the strip). Ex Gary Diffen. RPSV Certificate (2008) as the then SG 69a (last listed in 2009 where unpriced; Gibbons no longer list Double Prints in these issues).
1863-71 Chalons Experimental Separations Perf 12 by Walch & Sons under Contract to the Post Office 1d carmine with Error of Watermark '2' SG 70a, bars cancel of Hobart, Cat £2750. An underrated rarity. Ex Collins, Julian Beresford, 'Isleham', David Cohen and Joseph Hackmey. Clear RPSofV Certificate (1998) and RPSofL Certificate (2008) that states "perfs at top improved". [Gary Diffen had only two pen-cancelled stamps. About 30 examples are recorded, most with manuscript fiscal cancellations and/or faked cancellations. Only four stamps have been authenticated as genuine postally used examples]
1863-71 Chalons Experimental Separations Perf 10x12 by Walch & Sons 4d blue SG 79, an unusually tall stamp, part Hobart duplex, Cat £2500. A rare stamp.
1870-71 Sidefaces Numeral Watermark 1d De La Rue 'dummy' stamp in dull claret block of 4 on photocopied piece from the printers' ink recipe ledger inscribed "Tasmania Red", the last unit with a stain. (Image1)

1870-71 Sidefaces Single-Lined Numeral Watermark 2d blue-green Perf 12 Printed Double SG 129ba, large-part original gum, unpriced unused by Gibbons. The doubling is most evident along the right-hand side where the frame of one print can clearly be seen 1mm above the other. Ex David Cohen & Gary Diffen. RPSV Certificate (2008). This is the only unused example recorded and the basis of the listing in Gibbons.
1871-91 Chalons by the Government Printer Perf 12 2d reddish purple SG 142 block of 5 (3x2), very well centred, characteristic irregular perfs, the gum lightly 'suntanned', Cat £1000+, for singles.
1871-78 Sidefaces 'TAS'-in-Bars Watermark 9d & 5/- Die Proofs on Glazed Card in black reduced to a little larger than stamp-size and fixed side-by-side into a sunken card mount (61x35mm), light burnishing at edges, "1870" pen endorsement on back. Superb. Ex De La Rue Archives.
1871-78 Sidefaces 'TAS'-in-Bars Watermark Perf 11½ 9d blue Printed Double SG 148b, characteristic uneven perfs, neat 'TASMANIA' in bars cancel, Cat £3250. The doubling is most evident along the right-hand side where the frame of one print can clearly be seen 1mm above & to the right of the other. Ex Gary Diffen. Rare: of the five examples recorded, only this and one other are not defective. RPSV Certificate (2007).

1880-91 Sidefaces 'TAS' Watermark Perf 12 4d chrome-yellow Printed Both Sides (Sideways on Reverse) SG 166ab, large-part original gum, Cat £1500. There are actually portions of four impressions and the central gutter on the reverse. Ex Gary Diffen.
1902-04 Pictorials V/Crown Wmk 2d violet Perf 12½ Imperforate at Right ACSC T28 unlisted variety (SG 239 variety), roughly separated at right, partly indistinct 'CHUDLEIGH/JY 13/03/TASMANIA' cds. The ACSC does list an Imperforate at Base variety ACSC T28ba Cat $2000 (mint); unpriced used. Ex Gary Diffen. Rare: only two examples recorded by our vendor.
1902-04 Pictorials V/Crown Watermark 1d rose-red Perf 12½ SG 240 with the Watermark Sideways marginal example from the left of the sheet Imperforate at Left, commercially used with indistinct cds of DE22/02. Unlisted in the ACSC and believed to be the only recorded example (mint or used). [A similar error, imperf at right, ACSC T10b, also stated to be the only recorded example, is priced at Cat $1500]
