Endorsed “345 Registered Letter”, with ST JOHN’S CHAPEL in blue, STANHOPE in green undated and DURHAM NO 29 1845 L. rated 2/2 (1/- registration plus ½ all-in 1840 packet postage) ms (AS & GS Rates book, p 76) and ms “M” = Money Letter all on front. MONTREAL L.C. DE 22 1845 red transit and TORONTO U.C. DE 24 1845 receiver on back. Likely Cunard “ACADIA” 25th trip [Liverpool 4 Dec, Halifax 17 Dec, Boston 19 Dec]. Letter enclosed £11.10.00 bank bill and reference to railway. Tape reinforcing three folds, torn at seal. Ex Willcocks. VERY RARE EXHIBITION ITEM. (Image)

EARLY strike STEAMBOAT LETTER TORONTO CITY OC 13 1848 6 hs in red and KINGSTON U C SP 14 1848 transit in red. No Brockville receiver. Rated m/s 11 ½ due to pay single rate 201 – 300 miles. 1855 Stampless blue TRANSATLANTIC late-era MONEY envelope FRANCE to TORONTO. PARIS 15 NOV 1855 in red on front, endorsed “Via Angleterre”. A different PARIS ..EUS 2d, 15 Nov 55 transit on back. Smudged LONDON 16 NO 16 1855 receiver in red on back. Endorsed “M” on front, despite new Registered system introduced on 1st May at 1d. ms rated “underlined 18” in blue - ?French decimes, 2/- stg due, crossed out. Forwarded to LIVERPOOL L NO16 C lozenge on front, then via closed bag to Toronto, where re-rated 3/1 cy due - possibly double 1/5 ½ d cy per ½ oz Canada-UK via US registered rate (Montgomery p A3-19). No receiver. Likely carried by Collins Line “ATLANTIC” [Liverpool 17 Nov, New York 30 Nov] as most Cunard vessels on New York run were requisitioned for Crimean War service. From Edgerton Ryerson to J George Hodgins, Education Office, Toronto, Upper Canada. Flap torn on opening. Similar to illustration in Steinhart, 1991, BNA & France. (Image)

M/s Pembina Nov 15th in black [Pembina N.D. was part of Minnesota Territory at this time]. Rated 10cts m/s, converted to large 6 collect h/s in black. TORONTO C.W. DEC 23 large single ring receiver in black on back. Docketed “Rec. Dec 23d 1856” and “In this Papa’s death!”. To Mr James Ross, Knox College, Toronto, C W. His father was William Ross. James Ross was postmaster. William was Sheriff of Assa and first postmaster of Red River Settlement. Black seal removed. RARE Ex: de Volpi. (Image)
