BLACK OVERPRINT: 'T.' on De La Rue Perf 10 2d deep red-orange tied to OHMS cover by 'CLARE/JA9/75/S.A' cds, to "Cadnia" but missent to 'KADINA' (b/s) with rare unframed 'P.O. RAILWAY/ 1 /JA11/75/S-A' transit b/s (affected by opening tear), very fine straight-line 'UNCLAIMED' h/s on the face, forwarded to Adelaide where GPO b/s of FE23/75 applied & superb 'DEAD LETTER/FE27/75/ADELAIDE' cds with Inverted Date Slugs on the face, folded for return to the sender and roughly opened at back with a couple of repaired tears. Number 1 of only two 'T.' covers in Anthony Presgrave's Census.
Cadnia township in the Flinders Ranges was proclaimed in 1873. However, the local name, Sliding Rock, in use since the 1850s, was preferred, possibly because of the confusion with Kadina, as evidenced here. Copper had been discovered in 1869 and the first Sliding Rock post office opened in mid-1872 (and closed 26.4.1881). Clare is 140km N of Adelaide; Cadnia is 325km N of Clare & 28km SE of Leigh Creek. Kadina is 90km WSW of Clare.
But wait, there's more. Offered with the unstamped black/blue 'RETURNED PAID LETTER' envelope with 'Dead Letter Office/...' imprint at lower-left, GPO cds of MR18/75 at lower-right & poor 'CLARE' arrival b/s, small spike-hole at upper-left otherwise remarkably fine. Plus the original enclosure 'NOTICE OF APPLICATION/FOR A RENEWAL OF A/STOREKEEPER'S LICENCE' with superb oval 'JOHN TALLENT BEE/CLERK/TO/CLARE/LICENSING BENCH' cachet. A remarkable trio, proving use of 'T.' Overprints from elsewhere but Adelaide, and the only usage in the collection of a 'T.' stamp with a non-GPO cancel. Endorsed "B", "C" or "D" respectively, indicating they were exhibits in legal proceedings.
