1880-CC MS60 white in a GSA envelope. When the GSA conducted their series of sales in the 1970's, coins that were toned or otherwise "blemished" were set aside and offered in a "mixed dates" category for a much cheaper price than the coins considered superior. Their packaging consisted of a simple blue envelope very similar to those used for uncirculated 40% silver Ike Dollars. The problem was that people with no understanding of coins or grading were making the calls on the toning and blemishes. Thus, some very lucky recipients acquired some excellent quality coins from the "mixed dates" category. A case in point is the present coin, which is a much better CC date. It's in an envelope indicating that it was a coin of the "mixed dates" category. They are an interesting story in and of themselves. (Image)
