Very powerful collection neatly displayed on quadrille pages, beginning with 37 examples of #1 Penny Black, including 3 on cover, a strip of 4, most have been plated and all are represented, some with duplicates, including 3 plate 11, 2 plate 10, etc; red and black cancels noted; also containing the very rare #O1, the "VR" Official (Scott catalog value $20,000); there are 14 copies of Two Penny Blue including a pair, most with Maltese Cross cancels red or black; #3 with several unused and 123 used, including a block of 4 and strip of 4, many Maltese Cross cancels with 7 having numbers within, also strip of 4 on cover; 34 of #4 including 3 pair and strip of 3, couple with number in MC cancel; embossed issues include #5 1sh green with 6 examples and 1 on registered cover with Cork spoon cancel, all with margins, plus 3 cut to shape; #6 10p with 4 examples full margins; #7 (2, with one on cover to Newfoundland); various perforated penny red & two penny blues with several on cover; various 4p, 6p & 1sh including some covers; also including #31 the 1½p lilac rose (SG 53a rosy-mauve) with minor faults, with BPA cert; various 1862-81 surface printed issues, some on cover; also 2sh pale brown, 5sh, 10sh & £1 (some faults); this collection has enormous catalog value and some very rare items, mixed condition, needs careful evaluation. Collection of 100's of covers, neatly displayed and annotated on exhibition pages, mostly originating in Great Britain, almost all with black edging signifying the sender was in mourning; the collector was especially interested in the British Royal Family, and there are various color portraits of Queen Victoria and other royals dispersed throughout; also included are mourning cards for Queen Victoria and King Edward VII; of the several 100 covers the first being 1840 Penny Black 4-margin example, many variations on the mourning cover theme throughout, all with detailed explanations; destinations include India, many to the U.S.A., Canada, Paris, Versailles, Brussels, Nova Scotia, etc; some interesting frankings, rates and other postal markings; also included is Mourning Covers: The Cultural and Postal History of Letters Edged in Black by E.A. Mourning cover addressed in the Queen's hand to the Duchess of Sutherland at Inverary Castle, and as was her custom, she endorsed the envelope "The Queen"; postmarked with red Crown and circle "Paid / 29 Oc 29 / 1850"; on reverse transit mark and Inverary receiver and black royal seal virtually intact; cover is a bit wrinkled with edge wear but still attractive; accompanying an exhibition page with color portraits of the Queen and the Duchess, F.-V.F.
